The Abolition of Man explains this. In the Harry Potter universe magic plays the same role as technology does in ours. The scientific revolution began with the desired goal of dominating nature. They first tried sorcery, then turned to science when sorcery didn’t work. There’s hints in the book that Rowling was very aware of this argument.
In Harry Potter why do muggles rule the world when wizards are much more powerful?

As the world decends into madness it’s worth rereading this book.

The last time I did I realised Lewis was making the same point as Herbert in Dune saying “Once men turned their thinking over to machines in the hope that this would set them free. But that only permitted other men with machines to enslave them.”

I have discovered the most English language word in the world: hemidemisemiquaver, aka a 32nd note in music. 1. A quaver is a mistranslated French word for a 1/4 note (it refers to the hook on the 1/8th note). 2. Preceded by word half in Latin, French and Greek. youtube.com/shorts/_NAGb2UTF…

Lorne Doerkson, a backbench MLA, gets a call in the Amsterdam airport on a layover from South Africa. “The party leader has resigned and you’re the only MLA most of us don’t hate. You’ve been elected the next leader. Do you accept?” 34 days later: “Tonight, BC made a choice, and it is going to be the honour of my lifetime to serve you as your Premier,”
How to play 4D chess like @LDoerkson: 1. Go to Africa. 2. Let your party implode. 3. Return as leader. 4. Let David Eby call an election. 5. Become Premier.

Zero lies detected. The same thing happened with the .50 Cal as an anti-aircraft weapon between the start of the jet age and the advent of the attack helecopter.

BC politics is a strange place for the uninitiated. Pictured: BC’s center right Priemier getting booked for a DUI while on vacation in Hawaii…….. His poll numbers went up. This time round the right wing party was imploding in internal squabbles, to the left wing Premier called a snap election.
Reminder this is one of the most liberal metro areas in the world and tonight looks like this

There’s 2 main factors explaining this: 1. For all the stereotypes, BC has spent 59 of the 81 years since WW2 with a center right government. 2. The BC electorate cares about fair play more than ideology. Calling an election when the opposition leader had just resigned was seen as a dirty trick, which in BC is apparently the breaking point in a way tanking the economy and having the worst fentanyl numbers in the world wasn’t.

To give a related example: in 2011 the center right Priemier negotiated a sales tax restructure with Ottawa called HST. It was effectively a tax cut and reduced red tape. But it was negotiated during an election where they kept the negotiations secret and didn’t mention sale tax reform on thier platform. A retired right wing Priemier organised a referendum against his own party’s tax cut, where it was voted down. So the right voted out a tax cut implemented by the right because the process was unfair. The next day I recall the discourse being “don’t you know this is economically directly against your interests?”

TIL the UK has 4x “water battery” power stations. The boring reason for them is storing inconveniently timed renewable power. The hilariously British reason is to surge electricity during commercial breaks from popular TV shows when everyone makes tea.

I’ve spent the last week sitting through people simultaneously claiming: 1. The military isnt giving the details they want because it’s a cover up. 2. It’s a cover up because they’re trying to make sure no one gets charged. Bit of a tip: when reporters ask for specifics that point to guilt they keep saying they can’t comment on an ongoing investigation BECAUSE that’s how you preserve the option of military and criminal charges.
I asked MGen. Rutland whether anyone responsible for range safety that day has been temporarily moved from those duties during the investigation. His answer: "I really can't comment on that at this time." Stay tuned for more on-the-ground updates @MediaBezirgan

I’ve done charge investigations (for much less serous matters). If the commander is known to have publicly stated what they think happened and who is guilty then it’s REALLY hard to get a conviction. It matters a LOT more in the military than the rest of government and in civilian life.

💀 Surveillance camera recorded how soldiers of Russian Armed Forces tried to cut a passage in a water pipe, which was already used by the Ukrainian military Noticing this, a soldier of AFU opened fire from inside the pipe at the uninvited guests.

One thing I am proud of as a Canadian: a few months after this attack everyone remembered Cpl Nathan Cirillo’s name, but no one remembered the POS terrorist’s.
We remember Cpl Nathan Cirillo and WO Patrice Vincent who lost their lives twelve years ago to a terrorist attack aimed at the very fabric of our nation. 1/2

A crazy day, but can I point out something that seemed insensitive at the time: What kind of mouth breather atoems Parlement hill with a Winchester 94 leaver action? The Tavor and the Mini-14 were still in the same gun control category, so he had access to them. Getting a restricted liscance for an AR-15 isn’t hard if you already have a Non-Reatricted license.
