Finally, Govt’ has acknowledged that all medical interns require facilitation, and is now going to reinstate the 1m allowance per month to each medical intern.
However, going forward, there ought to be a discussion on increasing the 1m, given the rising cost of living and inflation over the years.

I am dedicating this Sunday praying for our Professor @RubabindaJr, the @TheUMAofficial and our young intern doctors. We have a duty to facilitate interns to do their work.

🇺🇬 SSENYONYI FLAGS POSSIBLE DOCTORS’ INDUSTRIAL ACTION OVER MEDICAL INTERNS
Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has raised the medical interns’ welfare dispute again, this time tabling a letter he says he received from the Uganda Medical Association.
Ssenyonyi told Parliament that the Association is urging interns not to report to their postings and has warned of wider industrial action by doctors if the facilitation issue is not addressed within 14 days.
Also in his submission:
• Why many posted interns have reportedly not reported for duty
• The cost of transport, accommodation and feeding while on placement
• The workload medical interns carry in health facilities
• His concern over what a wider doctors’ industrial action could mean for health services
Ssenyonyi wants government to give Parliament a clear response on the matter.

BREAKING NEWS 🚨:
The Uganda Medical Association (UMA) has announced industrial action over the ongoing welfare and deployment crisis affecting medical interns and the wider medical profession.
Doctors have given government 14 days to provide clear, written and satisfactory commitments on the deployment and facilitation of medical interns.
If government fails to act, doctors across Uganda will commence industrial action.

The entire country needs to stand together and demand that medical interns are paid.
Medical interns should continue withholding their services until the government addresses the issue of their facilitation. It is deeply unfortunate that patients may suffer and some die because of this standoff, but the government must understand that medical interns cannot work without the basic support they deserve.
They are an essential part of our health system, not free labour.
Let us all speak with one voice:

STANDING WITH INTERNS: SHOs & FELLOWS REJECT NETH 2025
National Senior House Officers and Fellows across Uganda have issued a strong statement rejecting the Shambolic NETH Policy 2025.
They stand alongside interns demanding withdrawal of the policy, restoration of the 2021 presidential welfare directive, and timely facilitation for doctors in training.
They commend the U.M.A President Prof. Frank Asiimwe @RubabindaJr and the NEC for their leadership on this issue.
