When Benchers took the LSO's important government relations work seriously, they helped the profession win on issues such as contingency fees. Coalition candidate and former Bencher John Callaghan outlines more...

Bencher election voting starts tomorrow. For those (like me) who oppose Stop SOP / Full Stop and everything they stand for, the 2019 election is often discussed as a worst case scenario. But the reality is that 2023 could be worse. A thread… 🧵

We've heard a lot about "creep" this Bencher election. Facilitating access to justice isn’t "creep.” Here are my remarks about this important part of our collective responsibility as lawyers. When voting opens tomorrow, please support all of our @BGG_Coalition candidates.

I am grateful for Larry's trust in me and the other members of the @BGG_Coalition to "effect change in Convocation" and "work hard and effectively in the governance of the profession in the public interest." Vote BGGC to return competent, representative leadership to the LSO!

Some final thoughts on the eve of the Bencher election voting period. I am enormously proud to be a lawyer. I didn’t grow up around lawyers. I wasn’t encouraged to go into law because of a perception in the Asian Canadian community that the profession was inaccessible to us. /1

Efforts by the LSO to address issues of inclusion and diversity in the profession are neither new, nor woke, nor creep. Listen to The Honourable Frank Marrocco, KC provide some historical context as to how our LSO has grappled with these issues since its inception.

To make sure there is no confusion, I am encouraging everyone to use all 40 of their votes (20 inside Toronto and 20 outside Toronto). My tweet has two parts to it, highlighting the Toronto candidates and the outside of Toronto candidates.

I have highlighted the members of the Good Governance Coalition outside Toronto. All lawyers can vote for up to 20 lawyers outside Toronto (whether inside Toronto or not). Please vote for the highlighted names! @BGG_Coalition

The @Ont_Law_Assoc conducted a survey of bencher candidates' views on several key issues in this election, including whether they support a properly funded courthouse library system and Legal Aid. img1.wsimg.com/blobby/go/63f…

I encourage all voters in this bencher election to review the survey responses. While @BGG_Coalition members are independently minded, we share the conviction that well-funded law libraries and Legal Aid programs enhance access to justice in Ontario.
