Bencher election voting starts tomorrow. For those (like me) who oppose Stop SOP / Full Stop and everything they stand for, the 2019 election is often discussed as a worst case scenario. But the reality is that 2023 could be worse. A thread… 🧵

Some final thoughts on the eve of the Bencher election voting period. I am enormously proud to be a lawyer. I didn’t grow up around lawyers. I wasn’t encouraged to go into law because of a perception in the Asian Canadian community that the profession was inaccessible to us. /1

To make sure there is no confusion, I am encouraging everyone to use all 40 of their votes (20 inside Toronto and 20 outside Toronto). My tweet has two parts to it, highlighting the Toronto candidates and the outside of Toronto candidates.

I have highlighted the members of the Good Governance Coalition outside Toronto. All lawyers can vote for up to 20 lawyers outside Toronto (whether inside Toronto or not). Please vote for the highlighted names! @BGG_Coalition

Only 9 out of 40 BGGC candidates could charitably be described as "Bay Street" lawyers, including a class action plaintiffs' lawyer and a criminal lawyer in a litigation boutique that also does commercial lit. Like "woke", "elite" just means whatever FullStop doesn't like.

If members of the BGGC are elected, it will be the first time in the 200+ year history of the Law Society where the elected Benchers are a majority female, in keeping with the fact that most new calls and lawyers under the age of 44 are female.

And please look at the voting records at convocation. Paints a pretty clear picture of the how some benchers view law library funding. Look at how benchers voted not just the box they checked @FullStopTeam @BGG_Coalition
Thank you to all #LSObencher election candidates who took the time to participate in our candidate questionnaire on Legal Aid, courthouse law library funding, paralegal scope of practice, and the candidate's involvement in Ontario's county and district law associations. 1/3

Peter Wardle has been a Bencher and knows his way around the important issues facing the profession. Let’s send him back to Osgoode Hall to complete the work at the LSO Bencher election in April.
From public inquiries to regulatory tribunals to commercial & business litigation, former Bencher Peter Wardle from Toronto has 35 years of experience to help return good governance to the LSO.

Same with providing adequate funding to law libraries. We all agree it is an important issue, but we weren’t required to have that view. We are, in substance, independent despite running as a coalition.
