Today, in @ScienceMagazine, we report that global CO2 #emissions from #forest fires have increased by 60%since 2001. Forest #fires have also shifted north and become more severe.

🚨 Launched: State of Wildfires Report 2024-25
The Americas felt the harsh reality of what it means to live on a more fire-prone planet, with extreme #wildfire episodes made 2-3 times more likely by #climate change.

Be sure to check out our key messages report, which not only covers our global findings but also includes a regional breakdown of the wacky wildfire events of the fire season.

Journal of #Pyrogeography has launched this week. We warmly welcome your submissions!
We cover landscape #fire interactions with #climate, #ecosystems, and #society and welcome studies from diverse research fields spanning the natural & social sciences.
sciencedirect.com/journal/jo…
Global, regional and local papers are welcomed but #geography is at the heart of the journal - studies should emphasise how their findings or ideas scale to broader regional geographies. Read more about our aims & scope here:

The @NASA satellites carrying MODIS sensors will run out of fuel in the coming years, closing a chapter on continuous #fire observations spanning >20 years.
We've seen and learned so much about #wildfires from the MODIS observations.
What happens next?
But overall, there are promising signs that, for most world regions, a consistent time-series of burned area observations is achievable as we transition from MODIS to VIIRS.
Mostly a sigh of relief, then?
So grateful to the folks at @NASA and connected researchers who are producing vital datasets for studying fires and a whole range of other processes on our planet's surface.

Very happy to see this publication with new estimates of how much water it would take to restore forests, and how should this impact human water availability
In our new paper in Nature Water, we figured out how much carbon can be capture on degraded/deforested lands globally, and the water requirements to support those ecosystems relative to human consumptive demand.

We all understand climate change is affecting fires worldwide.🔥
But how much exactly?🤔
Chantelle Burton and I have analysed this (together with an amazing team of co-authors).📈
Climate Change is causing ~15.8% of the current burned area!😵
