Risk assessment can be complex. So important that women access maternity services working hard to provide safe care. Media & other online comments sometimes not helpful for women & families needing expert support & advice.

There are two experts in the room - the patient, an expert in themselves and the doctor, expert in medicine.
Another simple concept to also consider- ideas, concerns and expectations.

So much support for our Obs & Gynae consultants, it has never been busier 🙏
Our campaign is about reducing burnout, returning the time we had to actually fix our services and regaining comparable pay. Here's me explaining on GBNews. #DemandBetter
For a government that claims to put the NHS at the heart of its priorities, yesterday's Budget falls worryingly short.

The label “corridor care” is hiding the true scale of the NHS hospital crisis, warns @DrAsifQasim.
We must be honest about the harm that is happening to patients

If you think it's not important to fix conditions and pay for consultants then read just one of the messages I got today. Where are the Drs? They've gone to places with better work life balance and better pay. Without Drs there's no NHS.

if we want those shopfloor staff to engage in any meaningful way with corporate/political agendas around use of scarce resources, productivity they have to be involved in solutions (which the survey shows they aren't) and feel valued and supported

Repeated themes in the Amos report:
understaffing, low morale, burn out, bullying, soaring caesareans, worsening outcomes, racism, poor facilities.
Since 2015, data shows maternity services have deteriorated into a dangerous mess.
Normal birth ‘ideology’ is not the issue.
NEW: A major national review into maternity services heard “repeated” evidence of “normal birth ideology” despite concluding it was not “widespread” – partly because it relied on AI evidence summaries – a former expert adviser has warned hsj.co.uk/patient-safety/amo…

Sepsis caused 133,484 hospital admissions in England in 2024/25, and can be fatal within hours.
A new Modern Service Framework aims to change that, with NICE evidence helping the NHS treat sepsis faster and more consistently.

If physician associates are able to train in "medicine" and are magically able to see patients independently in two years - why does it take doctors 5 to 6 years medical degree and 10 years postgraduate training before achieving independence?
We have to decide whether we want a safe healthcare service delivered by fully trained doctors or go back to a free for all where anyone can practice medicine with a cursory level of knowledge/ training and do away with medical degrees / medical training
It's like living in a parallel universe where simultaneously you need over 15 years of training to be considered safe as a doctor but anyone else can do a simple course and get stuck in.
Allowing physician assistants to see undifferentiated patients would be irresponsible and poorly evidenced, says @TheBMA's Tom Dolphin
He warns that vague guidelines on supervision fail to address the safety concerns that have been repeatedly raised

Please please please stop using "simple" when describing a blood test. Headline & standfirst writers love it, but it is unhelpful.
The cliché grossly misleads with regards to the complexity of interpreting and contextualising the results (especially when equivocal).

If a baby’s head goes beyond a certain point within the pelvis, a caesarean is most definitely not “safer”. Higher risk of PPH, bladder damage and damage to the (stretched up) cervix which can cause tragic second trimester loss or extreme preterm birth in subsequent pregnancies.
