What drives presidents to designate national monuments—and why has executive discretion under the Antiquities Act expanded so dramatically? In this paper, @JordanLofthouse examines more than a century of presidential monument designations. He argues that presidents often use their broad unilateral authority not only to protect historic and scientific resources, but also to: • Improve electoral prospects for themselves and their party • Engage in strategic political exchanges • Shape and strengthen their presidential legacy Drawing on case studies from recent administrations, he offers an explanation for how presidents use discretion under the Antiquities Act—and why Congress and the courts have done relatively little to constrain it. 🔗 Read the paper here mercatus.org/hayekprogram/re…

Today I met Nobel winner Daron Acemoglu. He came to @mercatus to record an episode of @cowenconvos (released in mid-August). He chatted with me one on one for about 10 minutes. Not only is he a brilliant scholar, but he’s also a really friendly person.

Exactly 50 years ago, my hometown of Rexburg, Idaho, experienced a major disaster when the Teton Dam collapsed. I wrote a paper with @vstorr to analyze the post-disaster recovery process in Rexburg. The paper is currently under review, but I want to share the draft for the 50th.
