In 2020, Austin voters greenlit a 20-mile light rail system — raising their own city property tax bills by 20% to fund it.
Costs ballooned, and the project's scope shrank.
For now, it will reach less than half the distance — at about 3x the original per-mile cost.

NEW: As Texas Republicans & Democrats vow to rein in homeowners' property taxes, many homeowners aren't claiming existing breaks.
Hundreds of thousands of eligible homeowners haven't claimed the homestead exemption. Lawmakers have spent billions expanding the break.
Story 👇
Not every Texas homeowner knows about the homestead exemption, experts said. If they do, some may find the process too complicated to claim the benefit — which can shave thousands of dollars off of a property tax bill:

Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Nearly two-thirds of builders said immigration enforcement is affecting their labor force, up from 23% in March and 13% a year ago, according to a September John Burns Research & Consulting survey.
“We’re almost dead in the water because our workforce is gone,” said Scott Brannock, president of Jacksonville-based Tidewater Homes and the Northeast Florida Builders Association.
“We have national builders who are missing projections, losing hundreds of thousands of dollars because they have slabs sitting on the ground and no one to frame.”

But registrations fell in Tarrant County, a swing county, despite population growth.
