Fair elections basically ended in the 1960s. Backed by Catholic and other religious organizations, civil-rights groups, and politicians from both parties, the Hart-Celler Act of 1965 helped create a voting bloc of second and third generation foreigners who keep voting for the party that gives them free stuff and their relatives still crossing the border.
Stack that on top of media influence, ghetto blacks and media-conditioned, self-hating Whites in America, and elections completely stop being about the country's future. They become a contest in emotional gratification and moral posturing.
The long-term consequences barely enter the picture. What matters is feeling righteous, seeing their side win, and taking satisfaction in sticking it to the other side, while the country declines.

I remember making 40k with a wife and two babies and having nothing left at the end of the month after rent and groceries, and I think about it still every day. If you’re struggling to make ends meet and keep your family fed with a roof over their heads, that struggle is simply the most pressing and urgent matter in your life and nothing else really comes close. This is something that many Republican politicians and conservative “thought leaders” still do not understand and maybe never will.
