Idea-constrained research @Phoenixyin13
Begging” for collaboration, GPUs, API credits, and so on @HaiyangXu3110
Don’t do a PhD to learn the tools. Do a PhD to learn how to decide what deserves to exist @Phoenixyin13
- Be able to define a GOOD problem is more critical now. Working on such problems usually makes you away from what is popular and convenient now. It is never an easy thing to work for future rather than right now. But that is what we believe and make us live as a true expert that can’t be replaced quickly @lasiafly
Cool paper. Worthy reading.
🚨Agentic Multimodal ICL: Can an MLLM learn to build its own in-context examples: what to look for, what to keep, and when it has enough?
We post-train MLLM agents to do this with tailored tools. ActICL beats similarity retrieval by +11.6 points, and boosts frontier models including GPT 5.6!
Key takeaways:
1️⃣ We cast ICL retrieval/context construction as an agentic task: the agent searches a demonstration bank with retrieval goals it writes itself, reads promising candidates, curates its context, and commits it, all under token budgets.
2️⃣ We train ActICL agents with rejection-sampling SFT followed by joint RL over acquisition and answering. Across 7 benchmarks and 3 backbones, ActICL beats the strongest trained baseline by +4.4 points while using only ~3.5 demonstrations on average.
3️⃣ ActICL contexts transfer: a 9B ActICL agent builds contexts that raise GPT-5.6-Sol by +3.5 points over standard retrieval, and it beats a Gemini3.5-Flash-powered agentic workflow on all 9 model–benchmark pairs we test.

Hi,
Tomorrow we are re-opening the Pro $200 subscriptions to new subscribers, but together with it we are also changing how we calculate the usage for it. In effect, if you do the math, it will net out at half the dollar in API spend compared to the old Pro $200 plan.
Now that it's said, let me explain why this is happening and why you will still get more work done than if you were on the Pro $200 subscription one month ago.
(a) We didn't want to compromise in other ways and are committing to not reintroducing the 5h limit, so that you can fully use the weekly usage when you want.
(b) On the subscription, we guarantee that over time you always get more work done and with an increasing level of quality. This means that you will continue to get more value per dollar spent as a result of models getting more efficient and us passing down the improvements in the form of API price reductions.
(c) We don't want to put an incentive on ourselves to artificially inflate the API list prices to make it look like you are getting a lot (and workaround it through discounts, etc). Instead we want to continue to both rapidly reduce prices and increase capabilities of models on the API. This week we introduced GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna at 50% of their previous price. Over time, we see prices go low enough that it makes sense for most to buy usage as needed without there being a significant gap between what you get in a subscription and what you get in the API for a dollar spent.
(d) Tomorrow, we are adding more things to the subscription that won't draw on the usage, I won't reveal what that is yet.
I wanted to be transparent before all the big announcements tomorrow. Lots of new exciting things are coming to the subscriptions that will make it super compelling, but I wanted to make sure to share this change ahead of time so you can all understand it before we shower you with good news.
Codexingly,
Tibo

Everyone has a take on China and AI right now. Very few have actually been to China.
I spent last week in Beijing and Shanghai meeting most of the major model labs, researchers, VCs, and founders building Chinese AI. This trip meant a lot to me beyond the work. My parents were born and raised in Beijing. I spent my earliest years growing up in my grandparents' Xicheng district apartment. As a child, I wanted to be a diplomat because I thought US–China would be the defining relationship of the next hundred years. I got as far as spending a decade investing across both and then the two halves of my identity stopped being compatible. This was my first trip back since.
Below is a write-up of what I found. In short: there is no version of the next decade where Chinese open models don't matter.

We Must Pace the Frontier: I’ve written a new essay on why the AI industry should slow down, with a three-part plan for doing so.
Anthropic is unilaterally committing to the first of these steps. We’ll provide third-party evaluators with permanent, employee-level access to our systems, so that they can verify adherence to our safety measures, report on incidents, and assess models’ alignment during training.

ICE just published a new memo (BCM 2608-01) targeting international students. It effectively blocks universities from authorizing CPT internships that are not strictly mandatory for every student to graduate.
Even though internships in CS are not technically required for a degree, they greatly benefit both employers and students. They help students get familiar with the U.S. professional system. They also give American employers early access to a vital talent pipeline from top American universities.
This policy change cuts U.S. employers off from vital STEM talent pipelines and tells the world’s brightest minds to go elsewhere. This is terrible for our national interest and global competitiveness.
We need to retain top talent, not criminalize academic internships.

i would rather be an optimist and work hard than a pessimist posting about why things won't work.
it's much more difficult and the most likely path is failure, but society fails if people don't try.
no amount of "it will never work" essays will drive society forward.
I enjoying working with 5.6 Sol since it's really a smart model which is also fast enough.
Or… what if we gave you $100 in Codex credits if you tell us what you love about GPT-5.6 Sol or why you switched?
Tweet it, claim your gift, enjoy more usage. First 10k get the free tokens!

(1/N)🚀Today we launch two tightly connected milestones in the Physics of LM series: a sharpened Part 4.1 (v2.0) and a brand new Part 4.2 — together forming a clear, reproducible, textbook-style reference for principled architecture research.
Part 4.1 introduced a synthetic pretraining playground — our Galileo experiment for LLMs🍎. Our v2.0 strengthens it with Gated DeltaNet (GDN) and stricter alignment, building an even cleaner “Pisa tower” for testing architectural limits.
Part 4.2 shows these synthetic predictions resonate in reality 🌍 — across 1–8B / 1T-token pretraining — confirming which design principles actually matter.
Together, Parts 4.1 and 4.2 bring the synthetic and real worlds into surprising agreement 🤝— one more step toward a more scientific understanding of LLM architectures.

⚙️ why linear models struggle at retrieval
🎶why a tiny horizontal mixer (Canon) changes everything …
this release ties it all together.
