I'm not crying...you are. #DogsAreTheBest
"My dad passed away two summers ago, and his old Irish setter, Ruby, still swims out from his dock every evening. Dad had a little place on the lake, and every night after dinner, he would walk down to the end of the dock with a cup of coffee and Ruby right behind him. They would sit there together and watch the sun disappear over the water. She was his shadow for 11 years, and wherever he went, she followed. After the funeral, we brought Ruby back to my house in town because we thought keeping her close to the family was the kindest thing to do. But she never settled in. She stopped eating properly, paced through the halls at night, and spent hours standing at the back door as though she were waiting for someone. After a couple of weeks, my mom finally said what the rest of us had been avoiding. “That dog needs to go back to the lake.” Ruby lives at the lake house now, and my mom stays out there with her. Almost every evening, around the same time Dad used to take his coffee down to the water, Ruby walks slowly to the end of the dock. She stands there for a moment, looking across the lake, before carefully stepping into the water. Then she swims one slow loop beyond the end of the dock, passing the same stretch where Dad used to cast his fishing line. When she comes back, Ruby climbs onto the boards, shakes the water from her coat, and walks over to the place where Dad always sat. She lowers herself down in that exact spot and faces the sunset until the last light disappears. The vet says there is nothing physically wrong with her. She is simply an old dog keeping an appointment she has kept for most of her life. We still drive out there most weekends. Sitting on that dock at sunset with Ruby’s gray head resting in my lap is the closest I ever feel to my dad now. Do you think dogs understand that someone is never coming back, or do they keep waiting because love has become part of their routine?

"She's been at our shelter since 2015. Eleven years. Every person who met her said she was wonderful. Every person walked past her kennel and chose a younger dog. She stopped coming to the front of her kennel a few years ago. Stopped performing. Made a quiet peace with being where she was." Last Tuesday a veteran came in. He said — "I need a calm dog. I'm still learning how to be still myself." I showed him three dogs. He was putting his jacket on to leave. He stopped outside kennel seven. Luna looked at him from her bed. Didn't perform. Didn't come to the tront. Just looked at him the way she looks at people when she decides they're worth seeing. He said — "Can I sit with her?" He sat on the concrete floor at her level. Not the bench. The floor. That was 11am. At 3pm | looked in. He was still there. Her white muzzle was in his hand. Their breathing had synchronized. At 3:15 he came to the front desk and said — "l'a like to take her home. I think we need each other." I excused myself to the back room and sat on an overturned bucket and cried for a long time. He texted me yesterday - "First time I've slept through the night in three years. I think she was saving that for me." She was. Eleven years of saving it. For one Tuesday.. For him. This story is dedicated to every senior dog still waiting for their Tuesday. They're saving everything they have for the right person to walk through that door.

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the President, or that we are to stand by the President, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile but is morally treasonable to the American public.” - Theodore Roosevelt 1918 Theodore Roosevelt wrote these words in 1918, during the final year of World War I, when debates over patriotism, loyalty, free speech, and dissent were at their peak. Although he was no longer president, Roosevelt remained one of the most influential figures in American public life. The quote comes from an editorial he wrote for the Kansas City Star, in which he argued that patriotism did not mean unquestioning loyalty to those in power. Roosevelt believed no president was above criticism. Instead, he argued that citizens had a responsibility to speak honestly about their leaders, praising them when they were right and criticizing them when they were wrong. Those words carried particular weight because they were written during wartime, when criticism of government officials was often viewed as unpatriotic or even dangerous. Roosevelt argued the opposite: that a healthy republic depends on honest criticism, even when it is unpopular. He wrote the passage in his May 7, 1918, editorial, Sedition, A Free Press, and Personal Rule, published just weeks before the Sedition Act of 1918 became law.

The Bicentennial was HUGE! My family had the opportunity to see the USS Constitution (Old Ironsides).. and hear the Boston Symphony (conducted by the legendary Arthur Fiedler) as it played along the Charles River. That was all in the seat of our country's birth. Truly inspiring!
Been thinking lately about wishing I was around for when 200 happened but glad to be around for 250.

Fascinating project. Among the sculptures is one near Grand Island called Erma's Desire. Some consider it controversial!
State leaders, artists and community members gathered Friday at the Interstate 80 rest area near York to rededicate a limestone sculpture created by artist Bradford Graves as part of Nebraska’s celebration of the nation’s bicentennial nearly 50 years ago. ketv.com/article/nebraska-re…
