Surreal that you can now just go ~*buy*~ the book I've worked on in some way for 5+ years, on what's fueled the climate crisis and what it might look like to salvage a more democratic, abundant future Please do buy it, and enjoy poking around in my brain! hachettebookgroup.com/titles…

Last fall, the CEO of the country's largest "quartz" countertop manufacturer donated to FL Sen. Ashley Moody A few months later she introduced a bill that would keep his company from getting sued by workers who cut quartz & get sick with a horrific, sometimes fatal lung disease

Most AI can tell you it's happy for you. Griffin shows it, in its voice, its face and its gestures, all at once. Rudy just got promoted, and you don't need the sound on to know how Griffin feels about it.

The question isn't whether LLMs are conscious but whether we should trust people who say they believe they are building mass extinction machines and/or a slave army and keep showing up to work every day to keep doing that

Astute comment at the end of this that a big problem in the world of voluntary corporate accounting/standards is that it always had as a backdrop a belief that binding regulations might come in the future. And they are looking less likely. newrepublic.com/article/2157…

Is there a good, thorough piece by someone who's not insane answering the question of why Anthropic & OpenAI employees and execs keep building stuff they think could kill everyone? e.g. sifting through the ideological, religious & political economy reasons

They drove @aaronsw to death for much less than this and he had legal access to the material and was downloading it for a non-commercial use. Still, the feds prosecuted the hell out of him, a case only dropped when he ended his life. This is a crime if what he did was.
OpenAI's President Greg Brockman, when told his company had hacked the NYT paywall to scrape the site, responded with "ah nice." That's a straightforward criminal violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. OpenAI executives in jail.

Product safety is pretty famously something that is created by laws
David is fundamentally right that safety is a core obligation of the AI industry. It cannot and will not be legislated. Safety is something that is built, not something that is created from the top down with law. Law, at best, creates the incentives for safety to be prioritized.
