NEW: On Friday, dockworkers at 111 ports in 22 countries and regions on five continents will stop work in a coordinated strike against war, according to the most recent information from the organizing unions. More than 25 dockworkers’ unions have now signed on, from Marseille to Mumbai, Hamburg to Montevideo, Melbourne to Oakland. Days ago the count stood at about 100 ports in 17 countries, and that figure doesn’t include the dozens of unions in other sectors that have pledged support. Their demand is simple: no weapons and no military cargo through their ports. Nearly everything the world ships passes through the docks, and without the workers who load and unload it, nothing moves. In France, the main dockers’ union says the country’s ports will be 95% shut. Italy, India, Greece and Turkey face 24-hour strikes, and Morocco and Cyprus will see stoppages of up to two hours, with rallies planned in port cities around the world. In Greece, metalworkers, ship-repair workers and young people are joining the dockers, and in the US, ILWU Local 10 is striking in Oakland and San Francisco. The unions are working from the Istanbul Declaration, signed in May, with each one deciding for itself how to take part. They are also fighting for their own jobs, against cuts from automation and for contracts, raises, shorter hours and safety. The unions point to escalating wars in Ukraine and the Middle East and the danger of a generalized war. They condemn Israel’s new crimes in Hebron, carried out with the backing of the US, NATO and the EU. Israel’s lockdown of the city is now in its sixth day, with more than 3,000 Palestinians displaced, according to the UN. Palestinian unions have endorsed Friday’s action. In Italy, the fight has spilled beyond the docks. The union USB has called for a nationwide general strike. Last night, the Italian government ordered transport workers back on the job last night. USB said it would defy the order and accept the steep penalties. The unions are calling on workers and young people everywhere to stand with the dockworkers, saying “Ports for peace and the peoples, not launching pads for war.” I’m reporting from Calabria, Italy, and I will be in Genoa tomorrow ahead of the strike to report on the ground during the mobilzation.

BREAKING: Hegseth fires the Pentagon's chief planner, Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, from the Joint Chiefs of Staff, per The Atlantic. Defense officials said the main reason for the firing was that he clashed repeatedly with Elbridge Colby, the Pentagon's top civilian for policy, causing Hegseth to lose confidence in Sylvia. Colby is the official who said in August the US is reviewing the strategy for the specific and potential use of nuclear weapons. He is at least the 5th general pushed out this year, each holding a key position.

THE JAKARTA METHOD is a fascinating & ESSENTIAL (need to know this stuff to understand this world) look into the global machinations of US admins (& their CIA) during the Cold War. Entertaining & informative flow 'tween personal tales, dramatic events, & straight political facts.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️, & I haven't even finished the audiobook yet. Immediately 1 of my absolute fave political reads. Despite the title, covers a LOT more than Indonesia in a mere 320 pages: Brazil, Chile, Guatemala, Philippines, Vietnam, Korea, Iran, etc. Also, plenty before/after the CW.

SILVER PINES ("side-scrolling Metroidvania SILENT HILL") has been very fun, but on Nightmare difficulty, I've absolutely spent most of my time reloading my last save to speedrun areas back after using too many resources. And once again because I got hit ONCE on that run back. 😅

Lula surrendered to justice, faced his accusers, went to jail on tampered evidence, proved his innocence and then won 2 elections in a row. Flavio fled a day after he won 60 million votes and a congressional majority.

One of the better Cyberpunk lore concepts is that there used to be one big internet and in 2022 one guy fucked it up so bad that they had to shut it down and go back to several smaller networks and they keep the corpse of the old one in a basement somewhere.

Travis Knight says that LAIKA will never use generative AI in their films. “AI is theft. It’s the ingestion of years and years and years of human creativity and ingenuity, regurgitated back. It has no humanity. It has no spirit.” (Source: theplaylist.net/wildwood-tra…)

Well well well. China's AI bubble has burst! STAR50 (CN index of AI/semiconductors/tech leaders) -40%! -$480B! Venture capital pulled out -67% on lack of return from AI. Same will happen in US, and it will APOCALYPTIC for us all. Sick joke: Big Tech only ones in AI who'd survive.
JUST IN: 🇨🇳 China's AI bubble has already burst, Reuters reports.

As I've said, what AI comps are selling is not "the future". It's a grift, peddling a limited product too narrow in range of applications w/ actual financial returns to make up for how expensive it is (on top of net negative societal value & blighting the planet w/ datacenters).

Finally games other than ZOMBOID (I died 🫣). Deez 4, if not sick of Metroidvanias after SILVER PINES & SILKSONG. If so, BLUE PRINCE over CASTLEVANIA? SP bit different: also moody survival horror. OOTSS (WITNESS dev) a HUGE puzzle adventure. Both Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam!

'Blue Planet III' will deliberately include murkier and less polished underwater footage to assure viewers it's real and not AI-generated 🌊 The David Attenborough-narrated series won't feature a single AI-generated frame (via @guardian)

Naguib Mahfouz won the Nobel in Literature in 1988. Ahmed Zewail won the Nobel in Chemistry in 1999, after winning the Wolf Prize. Omar Yaghi won the Nobel in Chemistry in 2025. Algebra is an Arabic word. So is algorithm. The math on this claim doesn't work.
