On #TDIH in 1984, Space Shuttle Discovery completed its inaugural voyage on the STS-41D mission. Over the next 27 years, it would go to space 38 more times—more than any other Space Shuttle in the fleet. Discovery is on display at our Udvar-Hazy Center: s.si.edu/3JLa0g5

Happy Moon Landing Day! On this day in 1969, Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon. This photo shows both astronauts on the Moon, with Armstrong reflected in the visor of Aldrin's helmet.

On January 28, we honor the seven crew members of Challenger - Dick Scobee, Michael Smith, Ron McNair, Ellison Onizuka, Judith Resnik, Christa McAuliffe, and Greg Jarvis - lost 40 years ago today. We honor their legacy by staying vigilant, humble, and uncompromising in the pursuit of our world-changing missions.

I would not want the job of NASA administrator because I’d have to deal with boneheaded things like the stupid shuttle law.
From a press release by Sen. Cornyn about a meeting with Jared Isaacman: "Mr. Isaacman committed to follow Sen. Cornyn’s provision of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, now law, to move the Space Shuttle Discovery in one piece from Virginia to its rightful home in Space City."

In 2010 NASA was reviewing where to send the flown Shuttle orbiters and created a score based institutions ability to show the shuttle to the public. Houston's score was the second lowest, but senators are trying to undo this and spend huge amounts of federal money to move a shuttle to Texas. It's like those parents on the PTA who insist that their child should get a participation trophy.

"Texas senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn want to take one of our nation's greatest treasures, the Space Shuttle Discovery, and move her to Houston. We will not let that happen. Join us, if you believe that Discovery and all of the Smithsonian's priceless artifacts should be protected from political maneuvering." keeptheshuttle.org

I've seen a lot of shitty space policy over the years. However, a US Senator in a tough reelection fight trying to steal a space shuttle from the Smithsonian, and the NASA Administrator being all cloak and dagger about it, is among the shittiest. arstechnica.com/space/2025/0…
