But Tuesday morning, Pike WOKE UP AND STARTED TALKING. Her reported first words were: “Where am I?” and “Who are you?” As of October 7, Pike remains hospitalized and seriously ill following Tennessee’s failed September 30 execution attempt. Her attorneys say she: • Cannot move her arms or hands • Has tremendously swollen arms and hands • Has a blood clot in one arm • Has pneumonia • Cannot swallow or eat • Remains confused at times, but understands that the state tried to execute her A Tennessee judge has now ordered officials to preserve evidence from the execution, including the drugs, syringes, needles, IV lines, medical supplies, surveillance footage and communications. Governor Bill Lee has suspended Tennessee executions for the remainder of 2026 while the failed execution is investigated. Whatever your opinion of Christa Pike or the horrific murder of Colleen Slemmer, the state attempted to carry out a death sentence — and somehow she survived.
