Mentioned this the other day, but the story writer on “Darmok” was a Harvard Classics BA named Philip Lazebnik who also wrote Disney’s Pocahontas & Mulan, and Dreamworks’ Prince of Egypt. The episode ends with Picard reading the Homeric Hymns in Greek, and musing that humans should take more interest in their own foundational myths. I watched TNG in its original syndication as a kid, and while I can’t say I went on to study Greek and Latin because of that episode (I’d credit D’Aulaires and Eyewitness Books more), it surely was a good thing to have a popular culture that reinforced the idea that a classical education was something aspirational, and also ‘useful’ in a really deep sense.

This is actually a condescending view of working-class people. I grew up in a working-class immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster and The Cheesecake Factory for "fancy nights out." But even we understood that the White House should not look like the inside of a Red Lobster. Working-class people are not culturally illiterate just because their experiences are shaped by their limited means.
