It's not this linear, more augmentations, more strain, you go crazy sort of thing.
It is a combination of a sort of phantom limb phenomenon resulting in people viewing themselves as less and less human, and thus becoming further dissociated from reality.
Along with the stress it puts on your body, exacerbating pre-existing mental issues, like really anything can. Drinking too much, working out too much, etc.
There are both examples of people in lore who just have their shit together enough to not experience this, and people who are already so dehumanized that the effect doesn't bother them.

No, nakeyjakey is right about Rockstar's mission design being their worst flaw and this is exactly the kind of bullshit they need to do away with in GTA VI.
There's no good reason why I can't run slightly ahead of the gang and shoot the guys at the stable without a mission fail.
More freedom is great but this was never a major flaw in GTA 5 or Red Dead 1 & 2, those games offer Rockstar's best missions by far in comparison to their older games. Just because you can't run off in some random direction, does not make them not extremely fun to play.
I am glad GTA 6 is adding alternate paths to missions, and it is an improvement. But it won't suddenly make RDR2 look like a terrible game in comparison
