Recently there's been lots of interest in alternatives to law enforcement. Many have also expressed concern about recent increases in violent crime. So: what non-law enforcement policies/programs have been shown specifically to reduce *violent crime*? A thread:

And... day 5 of classes, UNC reports COVID19 clusters in two residence halls. (I feel important to note that the university did not test students upon return to campus.) teapawt.net/dailytarheel/status/12…
BREAKING: Carolina Housing reported two COVID-19 clusters today: one at Granville Towers and one at Ehringhaus Residence Hall. This is a developing story - check back here soon for more details.

Seconded. My kids are half Indian. I talked to my son and he said “there aren’t many people like me and now one might be Vice President!” And my daughter might grow up never thinking this isn’t just how things are. That one brings tears to my eyes. Thanks @SenKamalaHarris!
It’s not a small thing, you know, to be able to point out to my young daughters that a woman who is Black and Asian is on this ticket.

We decided in March to take any excuse for a celebration. Happy half birthday kid!

“I want you to know that in the last days and hours of my life you inspired me,” wrote Representative John Lewis, who penned this essay shortly before his death on July 17. We are publishing it today, on the day of his funeral. nyti.ms/2DnprJ2

The numerous expert designers (and technologists!) who are not wealthy and/or educationally privileged white non-disabled cis men have often been ignored, their labor appropriated, and their stories erased from the history of tech and design.

I really can’t explain how deeply upsetting the #MedBikini inciting article is. I’m probably shouting into an echo chamber, but in case anyone out there is a little 🤷🏻‍♂️, let me explain: 1/n

If you are a clinician who used telemedicine this year, please consider sharing your experience. This 10 min. survey will inform the design of future technologies to support remote care. Bonus: At the end we show the responses of other clinicians — they are fascinating to read!

Recently, an International PhD student submitted an application for a position I have open. Their pitch to me in their cover letter is "I don't have an accent". 💔 Let's just end the assumption that having an accent = lack of skills or intelligence. K. Thnx. @AcademicChatter

I wish I had shared this yesterday during #ShareTheMicNowMed when I had @AtulGroverMD’s platform, but I’m sure there are a few people out there that may see this and feel motivated to like & retweet after listening. Think on this some, if you haven’t thought of this before...

This ride and these young people are so inspiring! Follow them as they ride across the country this summer to raise funds and awareness for AYA cancer!
This wonderful group of high school students is riding across country to raise money for the @UNC_AYA_Cancer Program and the @BeLoudSophie Foundation. The last two rides have raised more than $60,000!
