(1/19) Europe finally seems ready to act against China’s predatory economic policies (Industrial Accelerator Act, etc)… Great! But beware: Beijing can escalate much further in derailing European defence and other industries… Its critical raw material weapon remains intact…

Replying to @LScazzieri
@LScazzieri and I wrote a short commentary for @EU_ISS assessing the damage of the conflict for Europe - and suggesting a way to enhance the resilience of the continent's defence build-up. Read below:
The Iran war exposes Europe’s risky reliance on US defence support. To secure their rearmament, Europeans must boost domestic production, deepen cooperation with Ukraine & anchor US production in Europe, argue @LScazzieri & @gspataf95. 🔗 ow.ly/IQqN50YGtpu

Defence clusters are Europe's best bet to boost military capabilities via deeper industrial & operational cooperation, writes @LScazzieri. From @eurofighter to @EATC_, bilateral/minilateral initiatives are not new and have only gained momentum since 2022. iss.europa.eu/publications/b…

Grateful for the strong turnout & rich discussions at #EUISS2025 yesterday! Europe’s strategic community came together around one key question: how can the EU act with power & purpose in a world of escalating challenges?

Alaska & DC summits: While Europe bought time and kept Ukraine central to transatlantic diplomacy, Trump remains unreliable, Putin's cooperation unlikely, and battles over security guarantees loom. @sbeverts, @oditrych, @LScazzieri & @gspataf95 chime in. iss.europa.eu/publications/c…

The scope for EU-UK defence co-operation could grow if the EU continues to strengthen defence co-operation with accession candidates. New @CER_EU policy brief by @LScazzieri Read here: buff.ly/SCGqDX4

I was very pleased to contribute my thoughts to this meeting in Westminster The EU and the UK are natural and essential defence partners. They need to elevate that dimension of cooperation over other elements of their relationship that aren't always smooth
This week, the APPG on Europe held a meeting on the future of UK–EU foreign, security and defence cooperation. With Russian aggression continuing in Ukraine & a less reliable partner in Washington, it’s in both the UK & EU’s strategic interest to work more closely together. /1

Another cracker by @LScazzieri Another nail in the coffin (hopefully) of 'third country like any other'....
"Linking the UK to EU defence tools as closely as possible would strengthen the pan-European defence industrial base and make a decisive contribution to Europe’s security. Failure to work together will only make Europe weaker" cer.eu/publications/archive/…

Either structure could help with quickly increasing defence spending, he added. “A big, co-ordinated injection of capital,” @LScazzieri of @CER_EU said, would signal “strong political will by European countries to step up for European defence”.  buff.ly/4i0JJH4

“There’s disappointment in how the Labour government has approached the EU and Brussels. ...there’s little to discuss with the EU until the UK internally sorts out what it wants as a package and that’s not happened yet,” said @LScazzieri of the @CER_EU. buff.ly/40szSC6

As @LScazzieri and I argued in our paper last month, a defence fund with a "coalition of the willing" has advantages: - No need to wait for consensus at EU-27 - Include non-EU members But a guarantee fund-design (per FT reporting) has downsides 2/x cer.eu/publications/archive/…

Bloomberg calls on the EU to get serious about common defence spending, linking @LScazzieri and my paper. There are even more difficult obstacles than funding. Europe's military planners will need to tell us what kit they need in a 10Y plan of sorts 1/ bloomberg.com/opinion/articl…
