i wrote about Taika Waititi's delusional and embarrassing Instagram post, and how it reflects a deeper problem about the impacts of social media on the entire artistic ecosystem:

That 'spiralling welfare bill'. (Actual spiralling not pictured, cos it's made up by neoliberal fearmongers.)

Halloween isn't American. Even if you dispute its origins as Samhain, the Celtic new year's eve, modern Halloween is a rehash of old European traditions. For example, carving root vegetables for this celebration emerged in Ireland and the UK (using a turnip instead of pumpkin).

You're on the money there - although I think The Partisan needs way more love. I know it's not an original, but it gets me every time.

I don't even feel you really have to call celebrating Lula's victory as libbing out since he's a committed leftist and this election was about like planetary survival

With the late, great Oliver Reed currently wowing 2026 audiences all over again with his incredible performance in the restored version of Ken Russell’s ‘The Devils’, I wanted to share this amazing clip of him from 1985.
The rather low-res clip comes from ‘In at the Deep End’, a BBC series in which presenter Paul Heiney tries his hands at a profession he had zero experience in. For this episode, Heiney was preparing for an acting role opposite Michael Caine in ‘Water’ and went to Oliver Reed for some pointers on how to play a villain.
Please enjoy what happens next.

This is true of virtually every state across Nato's membership. Under no circumstance should you go willingly into their meat grinder. You have no stakes in its success.
Just to point out: the Dutch government have a plan to enlist every one of you to kill or be killed in a war for profit, but until now they had no plan to ensure you can eat - and they still have no plan to ensure you can live in a fucking house.

Around four years ago, I was discussing the war in Ukraine with an Irish journalist on a balcony in Berlin. I told him that the West miscalculated and that NATO countries could not, in the long run, resolve the contradictions that this confrontation would unleash. Cracks would soon begin to emerge, and that, surely, was part of the calculus.
He seemed aghast. He repeated that mantra — apparently mandatory for Western journalists — that Putin hoped for his “full-scale invasion” to succeed in three days, that NATO had now dramatically expanded its border with Russia, and that the West was more united than ever. I told him that we should speak again in a few years.
We never did, but I wonder what he would say now. It is breathtaking how deeply Europe has transformed since then. The loss of affordable energy, now exacerbated by the NATO-backed US-Zionist war in Iran, is decimating its industrial base. In Palestine, Europe supported a colonial genocide to the hilt, destroying its political standing on the world stage.
With two pillars of its hegemony in tatters, Europe’s final recourse is militarization. It has launched a rearmament drive comparable in scale to that which preceded the First World War, it is actively toying with the apocalyptic danger of nuclear war, it is decimating the social democratic compact to pay for the transition to a war economy, and it is deploying extreme violence against its citizens to secure these policies.
European capital is on the back foot, and the objective conditions for fascism’s return to the political center are in place. It is clearer than ever that this crisis is only going to deepen, producing irreparable fractures in the edifice of Western power.
