I don’t think I have ever read a government watchdog report quite as blunt and brutal as this … it should be a best seller. More importantly it should be a wake up call for the government, the companies and all of us. And forgive me a hashtag #Brexshit gov.uk/government/publicatio…

The EU fee was about £12.6bn a year, whereas the estimated Brexit loss of output is now roughly £170bn–£230bn a year, with an associated loss of tax revenue of roughly £65bn–£85bn a year. That makes the fee equivalent to only about 5–7% of the estimated annual GDP loss. #BrexSHIT

Yes. Free movement never meant an unconditional right to settle anywhere in Europe. Belgium, Austria, Denmark and at least 10 other EU countries require registration and evidence of employment or sufficient means. Britain could have adopted similar controls before Brexit. It chose not to. That's a failure of British government, not EU law.
Replying to @eurorealist
Do you have any evidence that these theoretical powers are ever used by EU countries?
Burnham just has to raise Freedom of Movement and the massive lies of the Leave campaign start again. Any minute now Penny Mordaunt will pop up to claim that the whole population of Turkey will arrive in the UK if FOM is reinstated. They lied in 2016, don't be conned again.
Here's what Vote Leave, Mordaunt et al claimed about Turkey ...

There is a legal case to prosecute members of Boris Johnson’s government for misconduct in public office. There is evidence that they negligently contributed to the deaths of tens of thousands in care homes. I want to know why there is no prosecution ongoing. Why?

Obama: "The one thing that the current president is focused on other than home improvements is enriching himself and his families and his cronies ... we've got a US ambassador shaking down a donor to pay off her credit card bills. We learned a Venezuelan billionaire wanted a pardon so he paid one of Trump's lawyers $50 million"

Andy Haldane will be brutally hit by the “cliche tax” John Healey is going to bring in!
EXCLUSIVE:
Andy Burnham must “take the knife” to public spending in the budget or risk a Liz Truss-style crisis that will “crater” the economy and the government’s popularity, an ally of the prime minister has warned
Andy Haldane, a former chief economist at the Bank of England, said he feared the government would deliver a “mañana budget” that deferred the difficult decisions on public spending and “doesn’t speak to the urgency of now”
In an interview with The Times, he said that Britain was “close to being taxed out and maxed out in terms of borrowing”. He spoke of concerns that the government was failing to grasp how “precarious” the fiscal position was
He said that the government needs to cut the size of the state and reduce taxes if it were to “unleash the animal spirits and generate growth”
Haldane warned Burnham that he cannot “vibe-code” his way to growth, and raised concerns about the gap between the government’s rhetoric and the reality. He said that the government was effectively deferring the “day of reckoning”
He also said that the decision to increase taxes on banks could show that the government lacked the courage to cut public spending. He said the move was “penny wise, pound foolish” and sent a broader economic message that if businesses make profits “the taxman cometh”
Haldane said that while Burnham had the potential to be a “great prime minister” who could serve two terms, the economy was his “blind spot”. He said that the fiscal situation facing Britain was “precarious”
“The penny has not yet fully dropped, including in Downing Street,” he said. “You see that in us having the highest borrowing costs in the G7, despite not having the highest debts and deficits.
“It’s the old Hemingway [Ernest Hemingway, the author] thing, isn’t it? How do you go bankrupt? First slowly, then very quickly. The biggest risk to Andy not transforming Britain, to not serving two terms, to not being seen in the history books as a great prime minister, is not political risk.
“It’s not those who sit behind him. It’s probably not even those who sit opposite him in Westminster. Keir [Starmer] lost the dressing room. Andy’s biggest risk is that he loses the dealing room. And then that’s an even more painful way to go, as Liz Truss would tell you.”

Trains, buses and trams connect us to work, college, days out... and each other.
They mean less traffic on our roads, less air pollution and a more stable climate.
The Government should use next week's Budget to support and improve public transport.

NOPE.
This cannot be allowed to happen.
Jackdaw was climate vandalism but if Burnham nods Rosebank through, after saying he would not, we know he's just following orders from Trump.
This would be a catastrophic decision for Labour but most importantly, the climate.
Shocking.

The Covid Inquiry Report, the ITV documentary on Reform, completely ignored by #bbclaurak All the focus today was on freedom of movement and how it’s a bad thing. I don’t think there’s ever been more compromised journalists at the BBC than Kuenssberg and Mason.

8 years on it look like the PM is taking on the argument, allelujah!
#bbcaq In 1989 the people of Eastern European embraced freedom after years of being literally walled in. Two decades on, it's our national tragedy that no leading politician will speak up for Freedom of Movement.
Here we go again
#WorldThisWeekend #TW2 #WATO Wearisome to keep going over the arguments of 2016 but: we did have control under FoM, govt had the power to require EU nationals who weren't economically self-supporting to leave after 3 months but chose not to use it.

Why Andy Burnham is making the right call to say that EU freedom of movement is not (or no longer) the problem portrayed by some, and why Britain would not have to join Schengen or the euro if it rejoined the EU:

EU FOM right to move to UK is only to look for a job for 3/12 & no entitlement to UK benefits. UK no longer is a big EU pull with higher taxes & living costs. EU has shrinking demographic & high employment so no large migration flux could occur. More OAP Brits might retire to EU – at Wolfsthal, Österreich

This is key. Outside EU, UK will follow most EU rules, with no say and without the benefits. Inside, we'll have a leading role + UK business will have a level playing field with EU partners/competitors. Re: free movement -we need workers, in or out. Brits need opportunities in EU
