In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump and his family have lost surprise elections, thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

I have just spoken by phone with the leaders of the Students' List @studentblokade, who won the elections in Serbia, to congratulate them on their victory. I assured them of Hungary’s support. I was delighted to hear how much strength our victory in April had given them during this difficult struggle.

What an extraordinary night for democracy! In Brazil, Lula has defeated the far right in a dramatic electoral comeback. In Serbia, a student-led movement has toppled Vučić’s authoritarian government after nearly two years of protests. Two countries, thousands of miles apart, have delivered enormous blows to the nationalist right. A powerful reminder of what ordinary people can achieve when they organise and refuse to give up. Next up, it’s America’s turn.

I don’t think I have ever read a government watchdog report quite as blunt and brutal as this … it should be a best seller. More importantly it should be a wake up call for the government, the companies and all of us. And forgive me a hashtag #Brexshit gov.uk/government/publicatio…

The EU fee was about £12.6bn a year, whereas the estimated Brexit loss of output is now roughly £170bn–£230bn a year, with an associated loss of tax revenue of roughly £65bn–£85bn a year. That makes the fee equivalent to only about 5–7% of the estimated annual GDP loss. #BrexSHIT

Yes. Free movement never meant an unconditional right to settle anywhere in Europe. Belgium, Austria, Denmark and at least 10 other EU countries require registration and evidence of employment or sufficient means. Britain could have adopted similar controls before Brexit. It chose not to. That's a failure of British government, not EU law.
Replying to @eurorealist
Do you have any evidence that these theoretical powers are ever used by EU countries?

There is a legal case to prosecute members of Boris Johnson’s government for misconduct in public office. There is evidence that they negligently contributed to the deaths of tens of thousands in care homes. I want to know why there is no prosecution ongoing. Why?

Andy Haldane will be brutally hit by the “cliche tax” John Healey is going to bring in!
EXCLUSIVE: Andy Burnham must “take the knife” to public spending in the budget or risk a Liz Truss-style crisis that will “crater” the economy and the government’s popularity, an ally of the prime minister has warned Andy Haldane, a former chief economist at the Bank of England, said he feared the government would deliver a “mañana budget” that deferred the difficult decisions on public spending and “doesn’t speak to the urgency of now” In an interview with The Times, he said that Britain was “close to being taxed out and maxed out in terms of borrowing”. He spoke of concerns that the government was failing to grasp how “precarious” the fiscal position was He said that the government needs to cut the size of the state and reduce taxes if it were to “unleash the animal spirits and generate growth” Haldane warned Burnham that he cannot “vibe-code” his way to growth, and raised concerns about the gap between the government’s rhetoric and the reality. He said that the government was effectively deferring the “day of reckoning” He also said that the decision to increase taxes on banks could show that the government lacked the courage to cut public spending. He said the move was “penny wise, pound foolish” and sent a broader economic message that if businesses make profits “the taxman cometh” Haldane said that while Burnham had the potential to be a “great prime minister” who could serve two terms, the economy was his “blind spot”. He said that the fiscal situation facing Britain was “precarious” “The penny has not yet fully dropped, including in Downing Street,” he said. “You see that in us having the highest borrowing costs in the G7, despite not having the highest debts and deficits. “It’s the old Hemingway [Ernest Hemingway, the author] thing, isn’t it? How do you go bankrupt? First slowly, then very quickly. The biggest risk to Andy not transforming Britain, to not serving two terms, to not being seen in the history books as a great prime minister, is not political risk. “It’s not those who sit behind him. It’s probably not even those who sit opposite him in Westminster. Keir [Starmer] lost the dressing room. Andy’s biggest risk is that he loses the dealing room. And then that’s an even more painful way to go, as Liz Truss would tell you.” Andy Haldane: PM risks Truss-style crisis if he dodges tough choices thetimes.com/article/9b12c00…

Trains, buses and trams connect us to work, college, days out... and each other. They mean less traffic on our roads, less air pollution and a more stable climate. The Government should use next week's Budget to support and improve public transport.

NOPE. This cannot be allowed to happen. Jackdaw was climate vandalism but if Burnham nods Rosebank through, after saying he would not, we know he's just following orders from Trump. This would be a catastrophic decision for Labour but most importantly, the climate. Shocking.

The Covid Inquiry Report, the ITV documentary on Reform, completely ignored by #bbclaurak All the focus today was on freedom of movement and how it’s a bad thing. I don’t think there’s ever been more compromised journalists at the BBC than Kuenssberg and Mason.

Why Andy Burnham is making the right call to say that EU freedom of movement is not (or no longer) the problem portrayed by some, and why Britain would not have to join Schengen or the euro if it rejoined the EU: labourlist.org/2026/10/imagi…

EU FOM right to move to UK is only to look for a job for 3/12 & no entitlement to UK benefits. UK no longer is a big EU pull with higher taxes & living costs. EU has shrinking demographic & high employment so no large migration flux could occur. More OAP Brits might retire to EU – at Wolfsthal, Österreich
