The underlying phenomenon is psychology. Evangelicals who believe indefensible nonsense like Young Earth Creationism are also prone to believe podcast slop. This plus anti-abortion absolutism depressed turnout. The Lone Bulwark is less Bulwarky than perception merits. Example: teapawt.net/Romans8Shaman/status/2…
Israel was on the ballot. Evangelical turnout went down. Evangelicals are not a pro-Israel monolith. Support for Israel among Evangelicals has actually reached new lows, according to Pew polling.

Religious people are said to be happier and lead more fulfilled lives in general but it feels like these are virtually inaccessable if you didn't grow up religious. Like I read the first two books of the new testament when I was 19 and I felt nothing, even tho i was (1/2)

It’s incredible how these cases turn people into the most complacent versions of themselves. Russell Brand could spend 9 years in prison without hard evidence that he raped anyone, but you’re supposed to accept “well, he was a bit of an asshole sometimes” as some kind of nuanced and objective take on the matter
What are your thoughts on Russell Brand being found guilty of rape and sexual assault? I'm firmly of the belief that if the evidence was substantial enough to prove his guilt, then he deserves to do the time for it. But I do wrestle with the fact that some of these allegations date back 20-25 years. I can't help but question why some of these women waited so long to come forward. Yes, I appreciate that fear and trauma can absolutely prevent someone from speaking out. But part of me wonders whether some knew exactly what they were getting involved in at the time, only to look back on it very differently years later. At the same time, it's equally difficult to believe that Brand didn't abuse his position, his fame and the influence he had over women. I think about how he conducted himself back then. The things he said, the things he openly admitted to doing, his attitude towards women in general. None of that, on its own, proves he committed rape, obviously, but it hardly paints a picture of someone who was completely innocent of any wrongdoing either. I'm genuinely interested in hearing what people think, regardless of whether they like or dislike Russell Brand.

Tucker, weren’t you just telling everyone nukes aren’t real?
Under pressure from Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, the Trump administration may be within days of launching a nuclear strike on Iran. The target would be Pickax Mountain in central Iran, where Israeli intelligence claims the Iranian government has restarted its nuclear enrichment program. No conventional weapon in the American arsenal can penetrate 300 feet of solid granite to destroy the tunnels where enrichment is supposedly taking place. The only military option is a nuclear strike. Netanyahu has been pushing hard for one. “Bibi calls Trump about it every day,” says an informed observer. Netanyahu is cornered and desperate. After last week’s election results, he can’t form a government unless Trump intervenes directly in Israeli politics and brokers a deal with other parties that gives Netanyahu 61 seats in the Knesset. Otherwise, he is out as prime minister and on his way to ignominy, investigations and possibly jail. Netanyahu must stay close to Trump. He needs this war. To that end, he’s applied maximum pressure to his closest allies in the administration, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and CENTCOM commander Brad Cooper. Both oppose a negotiated settlement to the war they’ve so grievously mismanaged; both are pushing to restart major combat operations. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and CIA director John Ratcliffe are also following Netanyahu’s lead, as are leaders of the Democratic Party. In a recent meeting on the subject, former president Barack Obama said he opposes the current Iran peace deal being drafted in Doha. The rest of America’s longtime allies in the Middle East are terrified by the prospect of more war. On September 27th, Netanyahu flew secretly to Abu Dhabi to enlist the UAE in his lobbying effort for a final attack on Iran. The Emiratis refused. After eight months of conflict, Gulf economies are teetering. So are global energy and fertilizer markets. They won’t recover soon. Globally, there are a total of about 850 supertankers used to transport oil from producers to the rest of the world. In October alone, 11 of them were badly damaged in Hormuz. At this pace, a global depression is imminent. A nuclear strike would radically accelerate the destruction. Fallout from a ground explosion at Pickax Mountain would contaminate the Persian Gulf, poisoning the water supply for 100 million people. And those are just some of the immediate consequences for the region. The rest of the world is every bit as exposed. No country other than the United States has ever used a nuclear weapon in war. Some would like to. An American nuclear attack on Iran would set a new precedent. The Russians have already told at least two other governments that an American nuclear strike on Iran would free them to use nuclear weapons against Ukraine. Pakistan and India would be tempted to do the same against each other, as would North Korea against Seoul. After the first nuclear strike, World War Three is inevitable. That war would be short and final. We’ve been sleepwalking toward this moment for months. Since February, the administration has quietly rewritten America’s nuclear doctrine to make first use of so-called “battlefield nukes” easier and therefore more likely. No one in Washington in either party seems bothered by this. Now we’re on the brink of it. Close observers say Trump is likely to decide by next weekend whether or not to use nuclear weapons. That would be November 7, six days from now. To his credit, he’s hesitating. At the moment, Trump is listening to his vice president, JD Vance, and to his envoy and friend Steve Witkoff, both of whom argue a deal with Iran can be made. They’re right, though it won’t be simple. The Iranians are famously frustrating to negotiate with under any circumstances, and elements of that government have become more radical since Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and his family were killed in February. After decades of isolation, even relatively moderate Iranian leaders seem confused by how decisions are made in the West. (There is a widespread belief in Tehran, for example, that the United States government controls Israel.) But overall, people who have spoken to decision-makers in Iran say there is consensus there that more war is bad for everyone and a deal is worth making. One group that hasn’t been consulted so far is the global population — the hundreds of millions of people who will be killed along with their children if Trump is pushed by Netanyahu into launching a nuclear strike next week. Now would be the time for them to speak up.

It is genuinely funny how down to the most fundamental level, every groyper is literally just a Oaxaca abuelita. I used to laugh when they’d say they had more in common with a catholic Haitian cannibal than with an Anglo-Saxon Protestant, but I realize now that they’re right.

Net Neutrality is funny bc it was literally just Obama imposing price controls & product bans on the internet by underhanded regulatory fiat in ways that bizarrely benefited Netflix & YouTube & Reddit, & then—when the judiciary & Trump/Pai rolled this back—Netflix & YouTube & Reddit whipped up an insane moral panic about how this repeal of absurd recent regs would end “the open internet” (& then Obama’s coalition actually censored the web in completely unrelated ways). It was maybe the 1st of the “whole-of-society” mobilizations which defined Woke1 & ResistLibs, & it oddly presented as “apolitical” & “nerdy” & “libertarian” while promoting an obviously politicized & retarded & socialist narrative. Infographics about how undoing Obama’s brand new “rent control but for bandwidth” would cause “walled gardens” & censorship, as the libs retreated into walled gardens & censorship; John Oliver propaganda claiming to be tech-savvy, to claim that it’s *actually* tyranny if tenured “apolitical” bureaucrats *can’t* lawlessly impose their party’s policy preferences on the web indefinitely; lefties all rebelliously marching in lock step against “corporations maaan,” by fighting for the right of Netflix & YT & Reddit to freely clog the commons without even being allowed to pay for or create private plots… The basics: in the 1990s, Congress updated its 1930s laws on telecom regulation, specifically to create a relatively unregulated “Title I” category, specifically for internet providers like ISPs (to insulate them from the heavy regs that controlled eg phone lines); partly thanks to this permissive regulatory environment, the internet grew like gangbusters, so in 2010 Obama had his tenured bureaucrats at FCC tell ISPs that even tho they’re *by law* “Title I,” they should “act like” they’re “Title II” heavily-regulated “common carriers” (like phone lines) in certain respects, “or else”; the courts repeatedly threw this out (eg in 2010’s Comcast v FCC & 2014’s Verizon v FCC, which were among other things literally about whether it was legal for ISPs to charge Netflix more for using way more bandwidth), so in 2015 Obama’s Netflix-Occupied Govt (NOG) had his tenured bureaucrats at FCC redefine ISPs as Title II Common Carriers. Except, well, even that skips over how Obama’s own appointee to head FCC began the process of (re-)legalizing “fast lanes” in late 2014, leading to the first wave of John Oliver Netflix Reddit moral panics about “ending the open internet,” so then Obama released a slick YouTube video publicly instructing this unaccountable tenure-protected “independent” agency to explicitly reclassify ISPs as Title II common carriers, despite Congress explicitly classifying them as Title I; so the FCC reversed course again, & in 2015 “net neutrality” began (& lasted less than 3 years total, but was presented as “immutable” & “fundamental” to the internet as we know it). Was arguably the opening salvo in the aggressive politicization of tenure-protected “independent agencies” during Woke1/Resist. What “net neutrality” actually means is that ISPs are banned from eg asking content providers to pay more for capacity at certain speeds (eg if they use more of it), & banned from eg asking content consumers to accept slower speeds for certain content (eg if it uses more capacity); so video platforms like Netflix & YouTube & aggregators like Reddit use *way* more bandwidth than eg emails & wikis, but can’t be charged more or slowed down for using more, & consumers likewise can’t be given carrots or sticks based on the composition of their data usage. So in practice you just get Netflix et al clogging the web for everyone, & getting subsidized by every bandwidth-light use of the web, & everyone’s thus under-incented to build out capacity; & consumers are banned from getting cheaper data plans if they agree to not use it for streaming. No wonder Netflix etc fought for this big subsidy—even tho it slowed internet for everyone (continued below).
For over a decade, Reddit never missed an opportunity to preen about so-called “net neutrality.” It virtue-signaled that the company was “built on the premise of letting individuals decide what content they find interesting. We believe the same basic principle should apply to the internet as a whole.” It launched multiple “Days of Action,” trying to scaremonger people into believing that the internet as we knew it was about to end—obviously wrong then and now. Without utility-style internet regulation, Reddit warned that corporations would take actions solely “for their own profit.” How times have changed. Reddit is now making its own “open” platform a walled garden. Specifically, it’s unilaterally decided to block consumers from accessing Reddit content unless they log in—what it calls a “logged-in-only experience.” (So much for letting “individuals decide what content they find interesting.”) That’s because corporate-controlled access yields more consumer-specific information that benefits Reddit’s own advertising and data businesses. All this despite the company being enormously profitable already—it’s made over $740 million this year, a record by far. Far be it from me to suggest that Reddit must be regulated or prohibited from doing what they think is a key driver of “monetization on Reddit.” Assuming no violations of law or regulation, my views here are clear—and they don’t change, even when corporate leadership previously accused me of corruption and called repealing FCC regulations “un-American.” But when a company that has constantly and vitriolically demanded regulation of its perceived rivals—to prevent alleged harms to consumer from conduct that was purely hypothetical—now explicitly boasts about giving consumers a less-open Internet to benefit its bottom line, it should get the public scrutiny and mockery it richly deserves.

I’m starting to realize why Californians get mad at people who talk about their state who have never been there. People’s perception of Florida from outside of Florida is perfectly inverse to reality.
