It’s one thing to watch someone become a monster, but another to feel everything that person is losing along the way. Tom Rhys Harries gives an astounding performance in Clayface, bringing an emotional weight to the horror in a way that feels incredibly personal. Happy anniversary to Matt Hagen, who debuted in DETECTIVE COMICS #298.

Just watched #Clayface, the #DCU’s first body horror directed by #JamesWatkins written by #MikeFlanagan and starring #TomRhysHarries.
Remember back in 2019 when #Joker came out, then a talk about a the creation of a DC Black Label in which grounded, mid-budget movies navigating different genres using DC villains, would be made, which never panned out? #Clayface literally is the pure embodiment of that concept, and an evidence of what we’ve been stolen.
In a seamless transition to horror, with the focus being the main character’s development, demanding no previous knowledge/home work, no Easter eggs nor anything distracting the moviegoer from what is in front of their eyes, we could see a D-list villain getting a full, self contained origin story in front of our eyes, in the most appropriate tone for the character.
CLAYFACE knows what it is and never looks away from it, and never aims for something bigger than what it should be. It truly believes the character it’s developing and the story at hand are enough to grasp the moviegoer, and oh boy, does it succeed!!
The movie does not shy away from gruesome scenes, nor nudity. It uses its R rating at its fullest, and somehow it feels natural, not forced.
And despite barely having actual jokes in the film, it manages to give the moviegoer so much fun via situations the character and the script navigate with such confidence and no self-seriousness.
But what I liked the most is that #Clayface aka #MattHagen IS A VILLAIN. Making this movie a horror and not having an established movie-star as the lead probably helped the film to keep the character true to its core, avoiding the forced antihero trap route. The script is so committed to make sure we have no doubt about his villainous nature that one of the killings is there literally solely to serve this purpose. Yeah, the film is a revenge story, but while it justifies HOW Matt Hagen became CLAYFACE, it never tries to justify WHAT he became.
Also, things only work so well because #TomRhysHarries is a true revelation. What an incredible job, and exquisite performance, literally a star-maker performance. He has that quality, and that aura which makes you feel like you already know him, even if it’s the first time you see him on the big screen. This guy is going places from here, I’m sure.
Also, we need to normalise again giving more actors chances. Out of the whole cast, I only knew #NaomiAckie from previous films, and it felt so refreshing to see truly fresh faces populating the rest of the movie, including the leading man himself, and everyone doing a nice job. That’s another advantage of making this film as a horror, because I doubt studio heads would allow anything like it if it was made as a blockbuster.
By the way, I loved the scientific explanation for the origin of CLAYFACE, the role of A.I., the subtle commentaries about beauty, access, corruption. It felt like a movie from any era pre-2010, when you would see messages if you wanted to, without being pushy in case you didn’t want to.
The pacing was really enjoyable and the third act in this film is GLORIOUS! Mystique would be proud, haha!
My only gripe with the film would be some of the dialogue. But I guess if you make of CLAYFACE a horror movie, you give your viewer the full experience, and the rocky dialogue used to be law in most horror films, so I think they took the mission to the heart 😂
I really had a great time with this one, and #Clayface to me is the most exciting thing out of the DCU so far other than #SUPERMAN itself.
I can’t wait to see him again! But I also can’t wait to see this format being explored more. #Clayface shows well how to responsibly take risks, as contradictory as it sounds, haha. And I hope other villains get similar treatment.
#Clayface is already in Cinemas worldwide.
Now seated for #Clayface!

- Superman was a universally praised and successful first theatrical entry with a fast sequel turnaround
- Lanterns is critically acclaimed with Emmy buzz and made HBO viewership history
- Clayface, one of the most experimental CBMs ever made, is already making its budget back with strong, growing word of mouth
- Even Supergirl, which was an objective miss and bomb theatrically, got a second life and performed well on HBO Max
"DC brand is in trouble" and it's the overall strongest and most unified the brand has been in over a decade
The budget isn’t really a point worth defending in regards to CLAYFACE.
Listen, even MORBIUS debuted with $39M. CLAYFACE, which is drawn from one of the biggest IP brands in the world, dropped with $15M less than Sony's horror spinoff.
A lower budget may limit the financial damage, but in no way does it create audience demand. And that's the point. Choosing CLAYFACE as the DCU’s third film was the misstep. Oh, and making 3 out of 4 set in the SUPERMAN universe. Yes, the DC brand is in trouble. What's new?

I love weekends like this one.
You have an R-rated body horror from DC. A 3-hour documentary that people can’t stop talking about. A tremendous dark fantasy from the wizards at LAIKA. A whimsical romantic fable that’s light and just lovely to experience, and a fun cat-and-mouse thriller featuring the great Helen Mirren.
All different, all Certified Fresh. Good stuff to watch no matter what your vibe is. When we’re complaining about Hollywood and complaining about how nothing feels fresh or unique, let’s remember weekends like this still exist. And let’s get out there to support these films so weekends like this continue to exist in the future.
Clayface debuts with a 95% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. 🍅
Absolutely insane for R Rated Horror.

Clayface is cool as hell. I've wanted a comic book themed horror movie for a long time and this feels like what I was looking for. That sequence in the nightclub was so well executed and I would LOVE to see Batman battle that version of the character in live action!

This shit was disgustingly great. At first, I was rooting for Matt until the end and thank God the end handled Matt’s evil mind/heart in the way they did because i ended up hating Matt despite all the bullshit he endured. I won’t spoil too much but, minus Caitlin & her boyfriend, I dead ass hate every single person who interacted with Matt and they deserved everything that happened to them. His transformation’s design & texture looked like a mix of Batman Arkham: City’s Clayface due to the sheer size and DCAU’s Basil due to the color of his mud and how gooey it is. I was ecstatic when I saw him transform not once, but twice. This movie’s gory and I mean very gory. It’s a lot of body horror so if you’re queasy about that, either smoke some weed or get something to relax your nerves/mind because this movie’s body horror is elite. The cinematography was beautiful. The colors, color grading, shading, and everything that has to do with visuals were on point. This is the most colorful dc movie in terms of visuals alone because the reds, greens, yellows, golds, etc were all sharp and glaringly beautiful. Matt’s truly a villain by the end and he even nearly became Sabretooth, Diddy, Crossbones, and Mandrill due to the heinous thing the almost committed. This movie was clearly inspired by BTAS because there were so many scenes that mimicked Clayface’s episode. I also liked that some of the movie titles were comic titles like no Man’s Land, and One Bad Day. This movie was great and it’s my 2nd favorite DCU project behind Superman. 9/10

obviously they’re all killing it here but everyone hones in so much on Cranston and Gunn that they overlook RJ. such a good job of conveying this vomit-inducing panic before primally defending Skyler with his life. criminally underrated. rest in peace.
