A pet peeve of mine: “But remember, Andrew happened in an El Niño!”
No it did not. El Niño had ended before August Aug 24, 1992. See the Nino 3.4 box… it had cooled already. Below: see the 3-month July-Aug-Sept anomaly… it was .3 and dropping. So yes, there was an El Niño in 1992. No, there was not any longer an El Niño in August of 1992. Its impacts were all but done.
Mets: please keep this image in your back pocket for this summer’s inevitable: “But Andrew happened in El Niño”
Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk!

Bucs WR Mike Evans couldn’t be covered during practice Thursday and won most of his battles with Steelers CB Jalen Ramsey. Todd Bowles has seen enough and won’t play him Sat.

With hurricanes, the window of worry is usually longer than the window of concern.
There is lots of chatter this week about Invest #97L, a tropical wave just emerging west of Africa that will travel across the Atlantic and likely develop into a hurricane according to most models.
Uncertainty regarding whether newborn waves will cross the entire pond to threaten the Caribbean or United States before recurving northward is a tale as old as time. That journey takes 7-12 days depending on the area threatened, and in most cases, we simply don't know the outcome this early. Details of genesis location and the compounding effects of 10 days of steering forces can't be precisely predicted yet.
The window of worry is open, but we have not yet entered the window of concern. 97L will be monitored closely next week, and we'll be discussing it as the future becomes clearer. Given it is August, those in hurricane alley should be in a constant state of preparedness just in case a storm forms and heads your way.

The Atlantic's "main development region" is gradually moistening up, as these two water vapor images from Monday AM and this AM nicely illustrate.
#96L is at western edge of this & should leave a more favorable environment for the next wave next week. 👀 #tropics #hurricane

Plenty of media talking #Hurricane #Dora influence on #MauiFires, so worth a deep dive 🧵 quantifying overall TC impact by removing vortex. 🌀
Result ➡️ Dora played a *very* minor role, slightly enhancing low-level flow over Maui at fire initiation time.

Welp. Blue means rising air - and it's over the Atlantic to start November. Increases the chances for tropical cyclones in the closing stanza of the 2020 Hurricane Season. Looks like an MJO wave, not moving much.

Here's a neat animation showing how chaos wreaks havoc with weather predictions.
Small discrepancies in the EPS ensemble members' initial conditions grow exponentially through time. By day 10, the initial orderly forecast field has been transformed into nearly-meaningless noise.
