Last year, I had the opportunity to interview Ed Logg, the programmer behind games like Asteroids, Centipede, Gauntlet, and many more. That interview was originally intended to be part of a straightforward career retrospective. However, over the proceeding months...
I carried the shovel, crank, and manhole key to the end just in case I wound up needing them again (I didn’t)
I don’t mean to complain about AI so much, it’s just so annoying when “advancements” in technology break stuff that was working just fine. I love when new tech betters my life, but lately I’m encountering too much nonsense.
I’m a bit of a Luddite. I had a landline til 2017, I have never and never will own a smartphone. I think Spotify and the like are for fools. Still, I love finding tech that I can make work for me, to supplement what I love doing in life instead of exploiting it or making it worse
Finished the game tonight, all three endings, 98% completion. It’s good! I am a little burnt out on this type of ambiguous storytelling (I’m just longing for more grounded stories lately), but I can’t hold it against the game. It’s really well made!
Been noticing more and more game walkthroughs that are full of AI hallucinations. Not just the AI summaries in search engines, but full on multi page walkthroughs. So much of what I used to use the internet for is now full of litter from these machines. Oh well!
Nearing the end of Silver Pines, been playing it at night on Steam Deck. Honestly, the story isn’t doing much for me, but the gameplay and exploration are extremely satisfying. Lots of good ideas in the design. I’ll likely reach for 100% of the achievements.
The AI labels on Steam are not punitive; they are informative. There is a sick parallel to be drawn here when you think about how corporate interests have played the victim and used this same tactic to battle against the labeling of additives and hormones in food products.
This immediately makes me think of handcrafted quests in Skyrim vs the infinite radiant quests. Just having a lot of something doesn’t make it better. Maybe infinite AI dialogue is good for a Seaman revival or something, but it’s not worth the cost imo.
Replying to @TheGray53
That’s a proven approach to the genre. The question is, how does a fixed dialog game stack up against a game with infinite dialog? Better for some designs, worse than some designs. Either way, expanding the available toolbox is good in my view.
Jordan and I are getting ready to record a new episode of Yeah, I’ve Played on Hellraiser: Revival, and we’re seeking YOUR questions and comments to share in the episode! Reply here or hit us up wherever you prefer!
I’ve always been curious about this game. Just played through the Steam demo, I really enjoyed it! The presentation is great, plenty of options, and it plays very smooth on Steam Deck. It’s a very old feeling game, but once you get the rhythm, it becomes natural.
IT'S BACK FROM THE DEAD!!! 👻

I once got a call from my mother.
”You guys made Max Payne, right?”
”Yeah, why?”
”I love it! It’s so good!”
”…What?”
”It was on TV last night!”
