MISA MOBILISES SEA RESCUE TEAM IN URGENT SEARCH FOR MISSING FISHERMAN IN ORANGE RIVER, NAMIBIA
The Missing in Southern Africa (MISA) NPC has been informed of a suspected drowning incident in the Orange River in the Karas Region, southern Namibia, where 30-year-old local fisherman, Blasius Witbooi, tragically lost his footing and fell into the river on 29 October 2026
According to information received, Witbooi struggled in the water and called for help. Sadly, those who witnessed the incident were unable to reach him, and he is believed to have drowned. His whereabouts remain unknown, and a search and recovery operation is being undertaken.
Following an appeal for assistance from the family, the West Coast Guardians Sea Rescue Services, under the leadership of Sean Naude of Namibian Marshall Rangers CC and MISA Team Unit Member, is travelling approximately 1 005 kilometres through the desert to assist the Namibian Police with the search operation.
The rescue team will deploy a jet ski, transported in an ambulance, to assist in searching the river. Should Witbooi not be located through the initial search efforts, diving operations will also be considered.
The family approached the rescue organisation following its successful recovery of a body in Tses earlier this year. The team has committed to assisting the family and working alongside the Namibian Police in an effort to locate and recover Witbooi.
MISA understands that the family has limited financial resources and is appealing to members of the public, businesses and organisations to assist with the fuel costs associated with the lengthy journey to southern Namibia.
APPEAL FOR PUBLIC ASSISTANCE:
Anyone who is able to contribute towards the rescue team's fuel expenses is urged to contact Sean Naude directly on +268 81 201 0821. Donations can also be made through the official Namibian Marshall Rangers Trust Foundation details.
MISA commends the commitment and willingness of the West Coast Guardians Sea Rescue Services and Namibian Marshall Rangers CC to assist the family during this difficult time.
MISA will continue to support efforts to assist families of missing persons and work with relevant organisations and authorities in search and recovery operations.

HAWKS SECURE PRESERVATION ORDER OVER VEHICLE USED IN ALLEGED DAGGA TRAFFICKING OPERATION
Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), through its Priority Crime Specialised Investigation (PCSI) Asset Investigation and the National Prosecuting Authority's Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU), has welcomed the granting of a Preservation Order by the High Court in relation to a vehicle allegedly used in the commission of a drug trafficking offence in Mahamba.
The preservation order, issued on 02 November 2026, pertains to a black Opel Corsa Utility, with an estimated value of R100 000-00.
The order emanates from an investigation into a case of dealing in dagga, demonstrating the state's unwavering resolve to ensure that crime does not yield profit and that instrumentalities of crime are removed from criminal circulation.
The matter stems from an incident on 09 August 2026, at approximately 18:30, when law enforcement officials conducting crime prevention duties intercepted the vehicle. The vehicle was driven by an adult Swazi national, Wandile Mkhathswa, who was the sole occupant.
Following a lawful request by police officials, permission to search the vehicle was voluntarily granted. During the search, police detected a strong smell of dagga emanating from the vehicle. A meticulous inspection led to the discovery of 59 parcels of dagga, wrapped in black and transparent plastic, concealed within sophisticated secret compartments located on both sides of the vehicle's body structure.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the parcels had allegedly been ingeniously hidden for transportation purposes. Upon questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted ownership of the dagga and indicated that he was transporting it to Pietermaritzburg for distribution and sale.
The suspect was subsequently arrested for dealing in dagga, while both the drugs and the vehicle were seized for evidential purposes and subjected to further investigation and forensic examination.
The successful preservation of the asset is a significant milestone in the pursuit of justice, as asset forfeiture remains a formidable instrument in disrupting organised criminal enterprises and dismantling the economic infrastructure that sustains illicit activities.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Gerber, commended the investigators and prosecutors for their diligence and professional acumen.
"The preservation order sends a clear and unequivocal message that law enforcement agencies will relentlessly pursue not only those who engage in criminal activities but also the assets utilised to facilitate such offences. Criminals must understand that the long arm of the law extends beyond arrests and prosecutions; it reaches the proceeds and instrumentalities of crime. Through strategic partnerships with the National Prosecuting Authority, we remain resolute in depriving offenders of the benefits derived from unlawful conduct," said General Gerber.
The DPCI remains steadfast in its commitment to combating drug trafficking and safeguarding communities from the pernicious effects of organised crime.
"Those who choose to profit from illicit activities will ultimately face both criminal prosecution and the forfeiture of assets connected to their unlawful enterprises" warned General Gerber.

CORRUPTION ACCUSED'S PLOT TO LOOT LIFE-SAVING DIALYSIS EQUIPMENT ENDS IN CONVICTION
@SAPoliceService
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), in Mpumalanga has welcomed the conviction and sentencing of 38-year-old Thabiso Steven Mokwana following a corruption-related scheme involving the theft of critical dialysis equipment valued at approximately R47 000-00 from a Dialysis institution in Trichardt.
What may have appeared to be a lucrative venture ultimately unraveled under the meticulous scrutiny of the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation (SOCI) based in Secunda.
The Evander Regional Court sentenced Mokwana on 28 October 2026 after he pleaded guilty to the charges against him. He was sentenced to a fine of R6 000-00 or two years' imprisonment for corruption, 18 months' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, for conspiracy and inducing another person to commit a crime and two years' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years, for theft.
The conviction stems from an incident on 22 May 2024, when the manager of a Dialysis institution alerted the Secunda Hawks after Mokwana allegedly approached him with a corrupt proposal. Mokwana sought to persuade the manager to steal dialysis consumables from the facility in exchange for R5 000-00. Recognising the gravity of the proposition and its potential impact on healthcare services, the manager reported the matter to the Hawks.
An unconventional investigation was authorised, culminating in a controlled operation. The transaction proceeded under the watchful eye of investigators, and the accused was arrested immediately after the dialysis equipment had been loaded into a Volkswagen Polo motor vehicle.
In a display of investigative acumen and operational dexterity, members of the Secunda SOCI gathered compelling evidence that left little room for equivocation. The successful prosecution underscores the Hawks' unwavering commitment to combating corruption and protecting resources intended to preserve and improve lives.
The Provincial Head of the Hawks in Mpumalanga, Major General Nico Gerber, praised the collaborative efforts that led to the conviction.
"Corruption is an insidious scourge that erodes public trust and threatens the integrity of essential institutions. This conviction demonstrates that those who seek to enrich themselves through dishonest means will find no sanctuary from the law. The Hawks remain steadfast in dismantling criminal schemes that undermine the rule of law and jeopardise critical services relied upon by our communities," said General Gerber.
The DPCI further commended the dialysis facility manager for displaying integrity and courage by reporting the matter.
The conviction of Mokwana serves as a stern warning that corruption, conspiracy and theft are not pathways to prosperity, but roads that invariably lead to accountability.
