With the start of the basketball season on the horizon, it is important for high school student-athletes (and just as importantly parents) to understand how basketball season presents some unique dynamics compared to several other high school sports. Understanding these dynamics (and acknowledging how these dynamics present challenges for all involved) is important and can better foster positive relationships between student-athletes (and parents) and coaches in the hopes of having a rewarding and successful season.

This player is absolutely on my must see list this season!
Has added some strength and a strong and confident finish in the lane, and at the basket.
Has defenders on their heels with quick pop and endless range.
2028 Brayden Smith (Elkhart Lake, WI) profiled.
"Smith is a highly skilled guard who is a high level outside shooter with some three level scoring ability."

Every teammate should be able to answer 3 questions:
1. What does this team need from me?
2. Can my teammates count on me?
3. Am I making my teammates better?
Great teams are built by players who stop asking, “What’s in it for me?” and start asking, “How can I help us win?”

A bad teammate can hurt a team more than a missed shot ever will.
Complaining.
Blaming.
Disconnecting.
Only competing when things are going well.
Talent matters.
But the players who communicate, encourage, compete, and stay connected are the ones coaches trust when games get hard.

When choosing an AAU team, ask yourself one question:
Am I joining a team where the coach is going to TEACH me, DEVELOP me, and make me a better basketball player?
Or am I joining a team where the coach is just a really good salesman who recruited the best 8–10 players and rolls the ball out?
There’s a BIG difference between recruiting talent and developing talent.
Don’t just chase the best team. Find the best environment to GET BETTER.
Development > Winning.

Something I wish I would've understood when I was younger:
How much time coaches spend thinking about what's best for the team.

The best teams don’t rely on stars, they rely on habits & standards. Every player owns their role. Every rep, every play, every ounce of effort adds up. Because when one person locks in, it pushes everyone else higher. The power of one becomes the power of all. That’s teamwork!
Owen Birschbach @Owen9592 selected Pre-Season First Team All-State (Division 3, Class of 2028).
Agile rim runner, versatile offensive skills, post facilitator, mobile defender.

Looking good in workouts does not mean you’re game-ready.
Can you read defenders?
Make the next pass?
Play without the ball?
Defend?
Adjust under pressure?
Skill work matters.
But if it doesn’t transfer when the game gets messy, what are we really developing?
