Warning: nerdy constitutional law point. I'm just pondering over the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Bill (as one does). The Lords introduced what are arguably wrecking amendments. They were rejected by Commons, insisted on by Lords, and rejected by Commons again. 1/

Only part of this Bill was a manifesto commitment (minimum service levels in transport strikes). Extending the same rules to other sectors (health, education, fire, ambulance etc) were not in the manifesto. 3/

I've got to the end of my thread and realise I don't have a particular point to make here, I'm just interested to see where this goes, particularly if the gov ends up using the Parliament Act 1911 to force this through without the Lords' consent in a year's time. 4/4

The Trade Union Act 2016 represented the biggest encroachment on the right to strike in a generation. We are now straying perilously close to outright prohibition in certain sectors. It’s a dangerous direction of travel. The mark of a free society is its toleration of disruption.
With a resurgence of strikes in defense of living standards, there has been a growing focus on 'minimum service levels'. In order to avoid the pitfalls of 'using and misusing' comparative law @EPSU and @ETUI_org have compiled this excellent resource epsu.org/article/right-strik…

I know it’s not very original but I do keep coming back to the idea of Chaos with Ed Milliband.

If you're working from home at a desk, sit with your feet in a washing up bowl of cold water. I can't describe how much better everything is now.

My eldest (14) is cycling the Downs Link in the hope of raising money to pay his way to to 2023 World Scout Jamboree in South Korea. Twitter friends, I wonder if any of you can please spare a couple of quid to help him on his way. justgiving.com/crowdfunding/… #wsj2023 #scouts

I’m no fan of Raab but isn’t there an argument that deputy PM should step in as caretaker?

Actually I’ll defer to this much more learned thread teapawt.net/cath_haddon/status/154…
ok, thread on interim/ acting/ caretaker PMs/ governments. TL;DR: there are rules. But, yet again, its based on convention.

And this one
If the leadership election takes several months, such that Johnson would remain PM until October, and if that is considered unacceptable, it would be open for a vote of no confidence to be held in the House of Commons. /1
