Counterpoint: If a nation does not have the combination of technical and logistical capacity to keep it functional, the F-35 would just be an unusable hangar queen. Germany was having trouble keeping less sophisticated Eurofighters operational a few years ago.

This is literally what happened to to millions of ethnic Germans and Japanese after WWII. The precedent of “you started the war, you lost, you can go **** off and live with your coethnics somewhere else” was accepted in general principles by the OG architects of the UN.

The other ~98% of persons displaced in the late 1940s were told to make peace with their new homes. This has been pretty much the standard for refugee resettlement after the lessons on revanchism provided by WWI and WWII.

8ish? NC polls close at 7:30, NC is fast to count, & Roy Cooper is far enough ahead in enough of the polls that if he loses, we should open up the D->R flip map. Which is maybe Sununu in New Hampshire, a fast-counting high-elasticity state with 7 pm poll closures.

I think the changes in border crossing statistics are broadly compatible with the theoretical result that interior deportations deter illegal border crossings. If all illegals are subject to deportation, the incentive to cross is reduced. The disincentive increases with cruelty.

Mamdani posted terrible performance for a Democratic nominee in NYC running against clownshow-level opposition. You cannot afford Mamdani-level underperformance in a statewide Michigan race.

Yeah, for transit it should be by ridership. And ouch.🤕

The long shot would be that she is declared ineligible before the election is certified, and that Minnesota somehow decides to follow the Greeley precedent instead of throwing out the whole election, I guess. I wouldn’t put that at 5%, but I could see how someone else might.

It was routine to do so if they had a history involving them in some way. If a candidate had written a letter in support of the KKK 14 years previously, his sister described their family as a KKK family, and his parents donated regularly to KKK-linked organizations, yeah.

Yeah, Moscow should be pretty visibly punching above its weight on the all-time longlist.

Yeah. Lenin (even with a short run) is higher on the oppression and death scales. He might not make the top 20 cut, but he punches above them.

She got 129 votes in New Hampshire after dropping out. Pretty sure AES was not one of those 129 people.

The closing lie here is a wild one. AES says he voted for Kamala Harris in the last presidential primary. Kamala Harris was not a primary candidate in 2024. She got 129 votes in New Hampshire in 2020 after dropping out. AES’s last presidential primary vote was not NH 2020.
WOW this exchange. @BretBaier tried to give Abdul El-Sayed a chance to finally explain the 2012 letter in support of the Muslim Brotherhood and Abdul awkwardly tries to speak over him. This flailing defensiveness is why we’re on week 3 on this issue.

East-West differences matter more withinin California (inland vs coast) on that scale. In the early US, New England (and sometimes New York) were referred to as the eastern states. We still refer to "Western" and "Midwestern" states.

The vast majority of the American public (as in the poll above) believes that not only do some states have a “right to exist,” but that Israel in particular does. You’re contradicting yourself on the valence & origin, as you previously characterized it as a “left-wing” belief.

I thought there's something resembling a consensus that it's just the amendment process. It is certainly legally possible to use the existing framework to turn the Constitution into a dictatorship via a series of amendments. Very few elements are immune to revision.
