The @UofMaryland Athletics Department has agreed to First Amendment training with FIRE after two student journalists were reported to campus police for “suspicious activity” while trying to interview @umterps football players.
Student reporters should be able to do their jobs in public spaces without fear of unnecessary police encounters.
We appreciate Maryland Athletics’ willingness to address these concerns. Public universities — including their athletic departments — have a duty to protect press freedom, not intimidate those exercising it.
For @testudotimes, @JudeWilkenfeld and I were outside Jones-Hill House trying to get players to comment. An athletics staffer took pictures of us, and a police dispatch was called for suspicious activity; a cop and 2 cop cars pulled up, and officers ID’d us and asked us to leave.

The Troops have unlimited funding and state of the art weaponry and can’t even weaken Iran.
LeBron James won a championship with JR Smith and Matthew Dellavedova.
Servicemen and First Responders should salute HIM.
What a fucking joke. “Heightened concern for player safety” about two journalists(who many staffers would recognize) asking questions from a distance in a public space.
This is disingenous at best and lying at worst from @TerpsSID and @JasonYellin
Official statement from a Maryland spokesperson on behalf of UMPD and Maryland Athletics regarding a police dispatch's interaction with Testudo Times reporters:
"UMPD was contacted today, October 21, 2026, about two individuals who were standing outside of Jones Hill House. Due to heightened concerns for staff and player safety around the football program in recent weeks, there has been increased security around athletics facilities. A UMPD officer approached the two individuals, learned they were with a campus media organization, recorded student IDs, and no report was taken.
UMPD and Maryland Athletics respect the First Amendment rights of all journalists reporting in public spaces."

UMD FOOTBALL STAFF CALLS POLICE ON STUDENT JOURNALISTS: Here’s University of Maryland Police’s dispatch audio of officers being called out to the Jones-Hill House for ‘people, possibly kids lingering outside the doors’ after coach Mike Locksley’s departure as UMD’s football coach today.
According to the dispatch audio, the complaint had been received after it had been ‘called in from the football staff.’ The ‘people lingering’ outside turned out to be @testudotimes journalists, who had been trying to get players to comment.
The two students were asked for their IDs by UMPD and ‘sent on their way.’ No further police action was taken. #UMD – at College Park, MD

A fitting end to Mike Locksley's frustrating tenure for media. I know nobody wants to hear us complain about access. But it was truly dire and reached an embarassing point this season. Hope that changes with a new regime.

Everyone should follow @NolanRogalski if you aren’t already. Being a student journalist covering a team that actively suppresses media access is NOT easy and Nolan does an incredible job of it

Good piece here. Locksley was a great guy and was the only one who was willing to take over the mess that was left behind. True love for the school.
However, he was overstayed and the last 2 years will taint that.
Will still hope for the best for him🫡

I’d still be in favor of bringing Locksley back as GM fwiw
It’s a shame for Locksley’s legacy that he wasn’t fired after 2024. Should have been known as the coach that got Maryland out of post-Jordan McNair hell and built a foundation for a real program.
Locksley gave his life to this program and I truly wish it had worked out with him
Man, just rip the band-aid off what are we doing here
InsideMDSports Scoop:
Maryland has fired defensive coordinator Ted Monachino seven games into a disastrous season. Terps defense is giving up a Big Ten-worst 33.3 PPG and has allowed a 100-yard rusher in every Big Ten game.

I don’t think admin knows the extent to which letting this drag out has broken fan trust
It’s gonna take a UCLA-like revival to get casual Maryland fans/students/alums bought back into the program
Michael Locksley was asked if Saturday could be his last game coaching Maryland: “I won’t get into that.”
Malik Washington was asked how the team would respond if Locksley were fired: “If the scenario arises, the scenario arises.”
An notable exchange.
