4. Oil and gas remain the Achilles heel of Chinese energy security - imports continue to grow after a covid induced downturn. But as consumers switch to electric cars China may start to reduce its import bill.

3. Renewable energy relies on imports of critical materials to produce solar panels and batteries, but since China dominates these supply chains and manufacturing of climate tech, clean power is far less prone to disruption

2. Domestic coal for producing electricity - is dirty, but does not rely on imports, so China will continue to be a heavy user of coal for sometime. At the same time the country has doubled its solar capacity in the last year and over time renewables will start to displace coal

The EU wants strategic autonomy in the prod of renewable tech. Building new mines, developing new alliances with like minded producers of lithium like Chile/Australia & ensuring sustainable supply chains will be difficult but crucial in the transition to a low carbon economy. 4/4

The price shock helps highlight another issue, China's domination of the downstream EV battery chain - in particular processing of minerals and production of batteries. As a industrial leader China would be expected to take a large part of this market. 3/10

Access to these minerals have been threatened by supply chain issues caused by war, covid lockdowns and production costs. As a result prices have increased esp for Lithium. While prices should stablise in the short/medium as supply chain issues settle, but... 2/10
