Are you considering home education for the new school year? Remember school is not compulsory. Home education isn’t school at home, it can be anything you want and the child needs it to be. #homeeduk #learnathome

On Tuesday 16th May there will be a private member’s bill introduced, seeking to legislate the registration of children educated outside of school. This bill would badly impact the home educating communities and how they operate. Find out more here scraptheschoolsbill.co.uk

Though, you did touch on something important: fining and jailing parents isn't going to make their children attend #school, if school is not suiting those children. We need to overhaul #attendance law and end these incentives, not threaten #HomeEducating families as well.

Putting law-abiding minority groups on a register is highly controversial, and there are data from various 'consultations' to back this. The current laws, if followed, work well. Plus there are huge - and genuine - data privacy concerns. Are you reflecting this in your coverage?

I so agree with you! @NickFletcherMP #HomeEducation The DfE needs to take a long hard look at their offering. They've forgotten who they are meant to serve, and what century and decade we live in. If anyone is to be scrutinised, start there! #PetitionsDebate

Replying to @Fletcher4Mayor
@NickFletcherMP Agreed. Elective home education is exactly that - parents taking responsibility for their own children. Responsible parents deserve respect from the State, not stigma. No to state expansion into the home. nickfletcher.org.uk/node/136… #home-ed-debate

Will we see a #fairdebate @NickFletcherMP Those pushing the agenda for a CNIS register continue to paint a picture of #homeeducating parents as #badparents yet we are #responsible parents making the #bestchoices for our children
We have scheduled a Westminster Hall debate on home education on Monday 27 March at 4.30pm. The debate will be opened by @NickFletcherMP. Two petitions calling for the Government not to introduce new requirements for home educated children received over 35,000 signatures.

Spot on! Another much pedalled myth around home educators not socialising. It shows lack of understanding of home education since play & community are at the heart of our approach. And yes, they get to play, learn, grow with all ages not just one age bracket/group day in day out

Educate yourself! Find out about the Schools Bill. Another Bill being sneaked through Parliament which is detrimental to children and their right to a suitable education and is a huge erosion of parental and children’s right. #stoptheschoolsbill

"This bill, if enacted, will see the destruction of the privacy rights of a minority group. The question is why?" Research shows that home education is not a risk factor, home educators need support not intrusion. #StopTheSchoolsBill jennyjones.org/2022/05/23/se…

The fundamental principle at stake is the right to respect for private and family life. #SchoolsBill #Clause48 will fundamentally shift the balance of power forever between families and State. Read more as the Bill progresses at: countingchildren.uk/policy/ #SchoolsBill End 🧵/ 25/25

Ofsted's impact on education is toxic. Their demands hurt everyone involved...schools, headteachers, teachers, children. Even home ed children, as Ofsted shapes our collective understanding of education and advances the pernicious idea that ALL must be measured and known by govt.

This kind of behaviour is abusive and inhumane. How can it be permitted under the UNCRC? The "voice of the child" is invoked as some sort of tickbox justification for whatever the govt wants to do yet ACTUAL children's voices are totally ignored
#parentviews101: “Oh my word what a morning....son went to school yesterday after 6 days of non attendance. The attendance officer came to the house. Tried to make him attend and even said she would take him to school in his pjs.” 1/

Home education takes commitment and dedication, but most parents are equipped to do it. You don’t need to be a teacher and you can use outside resources. You don’t need to recreate school at home. Home educators are usually facilitators, not teachers.

It has always seemed desperately unfair that those families who did not choose home education freely - but who nevertheless stepped up to protect their children and give them the personalised education needed - come in for the most criticism. @PACTenquiries
‘“Most parents aren’t equipped to do it, and if they are motivated by their own or their child’s anxiety, rather than a deeply held desire to home-educate – the outcomes for their child are unlikely to be great,” she will add.’ standard.co.uk/news/uk/ofste…

Reflecting on all the noise around home education this past week & recalling how valuable the experience was for my son. His learning was not necessarily obvious to those who only measure progress via data, but the therapeutic approach was both fundamental & successful for him.

What is ‘freedom’ in the context of an infectious disease? If you say: I decide the acceptable level of risk for me, that’s my ‘choice’. Then what about the risk you might pose to others? Is that your choice or theirs? If that’s your choice too then where is their freedom?
