I just shared Love & Blessing with my oldest daughter (who is far deeper than I am). She heard that last line about Love and Blessings, ours to hold, but not to keep, and clutched her chest, letting out an agonized sigh of admiration for his songwriting genius.

This is exactly me. As I get older, I am acutely aware that it could all end in a second. I am increasingly aware of the perils of life.

You still need to come up and we’ll go to The Farmer’s Dog - next year perhaps, it’s a pub definitely at its best in spring / summer.

In the chapter Mast Head, Melville talks about being so caught up in reverie, as he gazes at the ocean, and the ship below him, that he (Ishmael) was a useless whale watcher.
His description of the thoughts filling his mind reminded me of how I felt sitting on the peaks I grew up near, looking out over the miles and miles on landscape below, and the sky above.
This part about the terror of life being felt onboard, or by the fireside rings true as I get older. Reminds me of Paul Simon lyrics in a way.

Moby Dick is full of these profundities that knock you back on your heels. Beyond the allegory this story is, these glimpses of the soul are magnificent!

“Someone once told me that time was a predator that stalked us all our lives, but I rather believe that time is a companion who goes with us on the journey, and reminds us to cherish every moment—because they’ll never come again. What we leave behind is not as important as how we lived.”

Albertus the Magnificient is using our entropy maps for genetics. It is not an alternative method. It is the ONLY method for distances. Correlation and covariances do not reflect informational distances.
Plain PCA distances are hard to interpret: the same gap on the map does not carry the same amount of information everywhere. Taleb et al. add one extra step that converts positions into information units and keeps the order along each axis. Per the authors, this makes distances interpretable and, in some cases, improves cluster identification.
The flat centre is the trade-off (Fig. 1). Groups close to the origin lose resolution, so a tight cluster there means “not clearly separated on these two axes”, not “identical”. In return, the outer groups are pushed further apart (Fig. 3b), so strong contrasts become sharper.
It doesn’t reorder anything and it doesn’t invent differences. And it is a map position, not an ancestry share, so I’d always read it next to the plain PCA and other reference sets.

FRIENDS: Is this legible on your phone / laptop / tablets? I am working on a new way to make charts look good on social media (as opposed to the charts that get shared on here that are always too small to read). LET ME KNOW 🙏

Boston feels closer to a Northern European city in structure, infrastructure and, alas, climate.
Yes. Taleb posted it on X in November 2025: "If you feel that you are in competition with anyone, for anything, you are a loser."
A close version appears in his book The Bed of Procrustes: “You have a real life if and only if you do not compete with anyone in any of your pursuits.”

I have long believed that P=NP, enduring much ridicule from Computer Science / Maths colleagues as a result. My thoughts on the matter: If you can hear Mozart, you are Mozart:
