No moral victory BS here, only sobering truth. I have nothing to sell you. Nor do I have to care what any SID or coach thinks.
There was never a moment it felt like Michigan was going to win this game, despite pushing it to overtime. Nothing looked smooth or executed rightly on offense. Everything was off and labored, even went it produced a positive result. The missed chip shot FG was the cosmic forces of the game punishing us for perhaps the worst goal line play call in the history of intercollegiate football the down before.
Beck should’ve been fired at halftime and never allowed to coach at Michigan ever again.
Indiana also went into an offensive shell in the second half knowing our offense is primordial ooze, so the defensive performance — while overall terrific — was also aided by that. You saw in OT the minute Hoosiers had to have it, they went right in and scored in two plays like a knife through butter. That’s the stuff we used to do to close things out, but Indiana is the superior program now.
We are a broken program. A school with no president, no AD, an OC that makes Kirk Campbell look like Bill Walsh, and a doddering head coach looking ahead to his shuffle board PR or retirement rides to Sturgis.
Multiple head coaches/OCs unable to develop even an average quarterback for three straight years now. Tommy showed nothing today he can become that. He was more poised than Bryce, but that’s a very low bar. And Tommy was the best offensive weapon the Hoosiers had in the first half with his mistakes. He directly assisted on all their points.
Not his fault at all, he played his guts out and it was right to start him given what we have. But given who we are (were) he also should’ve never been in there. Even Bluebonnet Bowl teams of Michigan’s past would’ve never sunk to needing him.
People are going to fool themselves with what ifs looking for any signs of hope here, but there aren’t any. This is the absolute best we can play against a good team given the current structure of our program, and it resulted in six points at home. And three of those came with the ball gifted at the Indiana 11-yard line.
This was Pinstripe Bowl Penn State team almost beating national champion Indiana last year. Or Michigan losing 42-41 to a way better Ohio State team in 2013, only to be firing Brady Hoke a year later. The flukes and letdown spots you see during the ebbs and flows of a long season, particularly when proud programs are cornered and shoot whatever wad they have left and still fall short.
Sure, Indiana probably has a great defense. But this is how the offense looked against Western Michigan and Minnesota, who don’t. We’ve been shutout in the first half at home in consecutive weeks since before JFK was assassinated and Kyle Whittingham was potty trained. Jason Beck ought to go missing faster than you can say Jim Boccher.
This is going nowhere. We need a new AD in place ASAP. Preferably an adult with vision who’s made major decisions at the highest levels of college sports, and not someone who checks a political agenda box for weasel academics who hate football anyway, or went to school here 30 years ago but wouldn’t be a candidate for any of our competitive peers.
Don’t take the cheese. There’s nothing to build off of here. We’re not better at anything after this game than we were going in. Indiana tried to give us a landmark win and we still couldn’t take it.
This thing needs rebooted with a younger and way more ruthless head coach. You know, like a Dusty May.
In the meantime keep enjoying the memories and merch from 2023. I know I sure will.
Onto hockey and hoops.
2008 is widely, and rightly, considered the worst team and offense in the last 60 years of Michigan football.
The 2026 team is avg the exact same points per game, and almost the same yards per game too.
Except 2026 is way more talented. We started the year with the #1 prep QB in his class under center, our first Ohio Mr. Football recruit since Charles Woodson and the #1 prep RB in his class at RB, and a way superior WR duo as well.
This is the worst coached team in perhaps program history.
When you find out Kyle Whittingham is the only Michigan coach to ever lose to Iowa, Minnesota, and Indiana in the same season.
As it becomes increasingly obvious Kyle "I call timeouts to give opponents time for more points but don't overrule play calls I know suck" Whittingham is our Howard Schnellenberger at Oklahoma, the need to broom the whole operation becomes increasingly obvious as well.
True, we currently have no administration, but the more I think about it donors are really calling the shots these days anyways. Michigan needs a younger, more ruthless head coach. Here are the coaches which fit that profile in alphabetical order, with their buyout in parentheses and the biggest objection to hiring them:
Bob Chesney, UCLA ($8 million)
Would he really leave after just one year?
Eli Drinkwitz, Missouri ($5 million)
Just 8-20 against ranked foes.
Jason Eck, New Mexico ($4 million)
Is this too big of a jump?
PJ Fleck, Minnesota ($4.5 million)
Would the Pentecostal youth minister schtick play in left-wing Ann Arbor?
Bryant Haines, Indiana DC (n/a)
Does he have the persona/gravitas to lead a program of this magnitude?
Jay Hill, Michigan DC (n/a)
Not much. His resume is darned impressive. Even evolved to a more explosive offense as head coach of Weber State, where he won a ton until alma mater BYU came calling. I'd make him interim coach immediately and see if team rallies behind him enough to earn the job.
Glenn Schumann, Georgia DC (n/a)
Why so few interviews for head coaching jobs despite stellar resume?
Will Stein, Kentucky ($7 million)
Would he leave a school he has personal ties to after just one year?
Charlie Weis Jr, LSU OC (n/a)
How much of his outstanding OC success at Ole Miss and LSU is him, and how much of it is Lane Kiffin?
You know, if you watch literally every other team play other than Michigan this season, these games and this sport are pretty entertaining and fun.
One of the most pathetic quotes by a Michigan head coach in program history.
He should be fired right now. This is loserdom. This guy has lost his fastball. Hand him the Country Time lemonade and a rocking chair.
Beyond pathetic.
Well, you’re going to have to accept it. Because you don’t play and you don’t coach. So there’s nothing you can do about it.
We are what we are, it is what it is. See you next season.
Replying to @MichiganPodcast
No I don't just accept that. We have the players to win and win now but the coaching staff has not put the guys in position to play well, ie Beck and Wittingham
Wouldn’t have made any difference whatsoever. You could put this offense on Indiana’s 10-yard line with infinite downs, and they would not score a touchdown. Systemically broken offense/program.
This is our Howard Schnellenberger at Oklahoma era.
At this point just have to accept this is our offense and it is fundamentally broken. No adjustments will be made or can be by current coaches/personnel. That will mean this is a lost season, and lots of changes will need to be made in the offseason.
Onto hoops and hockey.
I was told not be optimistic on Etta same as Frazier, so this is good news.
