1978 saw a conservative revolt, and in MN would become the infamous "Minnesota Massacre". An early warning sign was when DFL-endorsed candidate Don Fraser lost the primary to replace the late Hubert Humphrey to Bob Short, owner of the Minneapolis Lakers and Twins. 🧵

In 2022, Julie Blaha won the race for MN Auditor by ~8K votes or 0.4%, in a similarly close race (but low profile)
Similar margins, but very diff coalitions.

Never before seen! The 1920 Presidential election in Duluth and the Iron Range. Harding won thanks to strong results from middle/upper class voters and mining towns. Cox did better in working class and railroad towns. Debs did best in logging towns.

On Tuesday, Saint Paul voters approved a ballot question to increase the sales tax by a 60-40 margin. The proposal to increase the tax by 1% is to help fund infrastructure like the city's poor roads. It did best in the 4th Ward and worst in the 6th and 7th, barely winning.

St. Paul Minnesota had city council elections last night, and in the hotly contested 3rd Ward, DFL-endorsed Saura Jost nearly swept the race, almost winning outright on the 1st round. The race was fought on housing, infrastructure, and the Summit Ave project.

Map of the 1918 Minneapolis Mayoral Election. Incumbent Socialist Thomas Van Lear lost to J. Edward Meyers ran under a "Loyalist" label which was all but Republican in name. Van Lear had a moderate term but lost thanks to the war and repressive atmosphere by under 2000 votes.

Map of the 1962 Minnesota Senate election. Candidates were dejure nonpartisan but organized as the Liberal and Conservative Caucuses in the Legislature. Minnesota had redistricted its legislative maps for the first time since 1913. This was the last before one person one vote.

Next up at 16th is Minneapolis-St. Paul. Towns in the Twins Cities' core counties generally lost population both years - though Minneapolis itself turned the corner in 2021-22. St. Paul didn't. Towns in the more exurban collar counties are generally still growing, though.

NEW MAP: In 2022, MN-02 re-elected incumbent Democrat Angie Craig. Craig won an ancestrally red seat by a larger than expected margin. She ran up the score in the Twin Cities suburbs and Faribault, while the Kistner won rurals. The Weed Party did well, but did not play spoiler.

BREAKING: Ilhan Omar survives #MN05 primary, challenger Don Samuels concedes.
Omar will win by ~3,000 votes, far less than the 35,000 she won by in the 2020 primary.
Omar 51%
Samuels 47.6%
202 precincts of 217 have reported
The campaigns are scrambling to figure out who's left to report.
Some left in Minneapolis are in pro-Samuels wards, but some pro-Omar, too. A short, but tough, hill for Samuels to climb.

The singular exception to Reagan's 1984 landslide was Mondale's native Minnesota - which by the narrowest of margins kept a Democratic streak alive which remains unbroken to this day. Thank the iron miners in the Arrowhead and farmers in the Minnesota/Red River valleys for that.
