Could one skill predict reading success better than IQ, vocabulary, or even background knowledge?
✅ It can.
And most classrooms aren’t spending enough time on it.
Phonemic awareness is often under-taught, but it’s one of the strongest predictors of future reading success.
We put together a guide with practical ways to strengthen it, without overhauling your day.

This is absolutely brilliant. Everyone who wants to use the term "zone of proximal development" should read this first. And then, if they still want to use the term "zone of proximal development" they should read it again...

“Instruction in handwriting is not about making handwriting pretty or perfect but instead about automatizing letter and word formations to free up working memory for the significant idea management necessary for good writing.” ~William Van Cleave
SORticle #8- Handwriting in a Modern World: Why it Matters and What to Do About It, by William Van Cleave
This article supported my decision to teach handwriting even when it was not in the curriculum. Students require explicit instruction of letter formation to form good habits, reduce risk of poor habits from forming, and to free up working memory to write for meaning.
One of my favourite articles ever & a must in teacher-ed programs. Link: wvced.com/wp-content/uploads…

Research shows the brain is far more active when we write by hand than when we type. Despite this, local authorities are spending millions on iPads for every pupil—a reckless decision amid declining literacy rates and other urgent pressures. Handwriting matters; we must not abandon it.
