I’ve been preaching this for years! If attention is the starting point for learning, why are we designing our seating arrangements in ways that compromise a student’s ability to pay attention!?
At a stadium, the seats are in rows facing the field so people can pay attention to the game. At a concert, they’re in rows facing the stage so people can pay attention to the show. At a movie theater, they’re in rows facing the screen so people can pay attention to the movie. At a church, they’re in rows facing the pulpit so people can pay attention to the service. Teachers, Why are you putting kids in pods with seats that don’t face you? Don't you want them paying attention to you?

Love this variation of Micro PD!
Our teachers enjoyed an optional, bite-sized boost of PL on orthographic mapping with our literacy coach @HollyDoro17! They came for a bite and left with a BOOST! 💚🌟👏 #TheTrojanWay #ExplicitInstruction #Tier1 #OurFoundationOurFuture @Hall_Schools

When our child started struggling to read, I was angry at teachers. I thought they knew. They didn't, and it wasn't their fault. In this podcast, @SorforMore talks about it like it's common knowledge: teachers walk out of college without what they need to teach reading. They're set up to fail from day one, then left to figure it out on their own Hearing that changed something in me. Parents for Reading Justice fights for children first. Always. But the more I get to know teachers, the clearer it gets: we're fighting for them too. Colleges of education failed them before they ever stepped into a classroom. Welcome aboard, Justin. Hang on tight. 🚀 We're bringing the Science of Reading to the whole bunch: kids, parents, AND teachers. 🎧 lwtears.com/literacymatters/… #ScienceOfReading #ReadingJustice #Literacy #Teachers #ParentsForReadingJustice

If we'd like students to *choose* the effortful way when it comes to learning, and reject AI shortcuts, then the most important information they need is 'how we learn'. Two pages of resources: itsalearningcurve.education/… itsalearningcurve.education/…

Back in May, I wrote a blogpost titled "Cognitive load theory meets trauma-informed practice". This seemed to resonate with a lot of teachers and I've now presented the idea at a couple of conferences/PL events. This has given me cause for extra reflection on the fact that there's students with overlapping but not necessarily identified needs in all classrooms. We do them no favours by assuming their needs stop at feeling calm and safe. They also need to be *learning*. I've termed these students SWANs - Students With Additional Needs and have updated the post accordingly. pamelasnow.blogspot.com/2026…
