Science faces an existential threat from the Trump administration, which means that a lot of scientists are losing their jobs. Some of us have spoken up against that, at great personal & professional cost.
I am not sure how many of my colleagues truly recognize how much danger our fields are in, much less the broader community. Our health, our food, our economy, our security, our power, our liberty…they all depend on science.
Without it, we are poorer, sicker, weaker, less competitive, dumber, and unable to thrive. Attacking science is attacking society.
In her keynote speech at IDWeek, my friend & colleague @celinegounder honored those who have put their careers on the line as a service to science & to the world in front of thousands of infectious disease experts. She kindly included me in this extraordinary group. I am so grateful to Céline for everything that she has done & continues to do for science & public health. ❤️💪
And after the elections, I am going to have a lot more to say about my own story.

😕The Pentagon has urged the Baltic countries to tone down their rhetoric towards Russia, - Reuters.
According to the news agency, U.S. officials have asked Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia to be more restrained in their statements about the Russian threat.
In particular, the Pentagon believes that statements by European leaders about Russia being in a dead end due to the slowdown in its offensive in Ukraine are "unhelpful." One U.S. official even advised Baltic counterparts not to "provoke" the Russians.

It is outrageous that @KMbappe was pressured to apologize for calling Mao Zedong a dictator.
Mao was the deadliest dictator in history, directly responsible for the deaths of an estimated 47 million innocent Chinese civilians.
The Chinese Communist Party’s attempt to punish a footballer for inadvertently speaking the most elementary truth about Mao is a damning indictment of its moral bankruptcy. The millions of Chinese people who suffered and died under Mao deserve to be remembered, not erased by the very government responsible for this unimaginable carnage.
