Seren is five weeks old, and it is July, and she has spent the entire month under the firm impression that the world was made specifically for her. She is not, in fairness, entirely wrong.
She is a European bison calf, born in June, still the deep fox-red of every bison calf before her, a colour she will trade for a dark, serious brown by the autumn. For now she is all leg and enthusiasm, a small red engine running flat out around her mother for no reason anyone has been able to establish, then stopping, abruptly, to fall asleep on her feet.
She has discovered grass this month. Not as food yet, not really, she still runs entirely on Freya's milk, but as a thing to be investigated, pulled at, tasted, and rejected with enormous theatrical disgust, before being tried again ten seconds later. She has discovered that the meadow is warm, that the long light does not seem to end, that a buttercup does absolutely nothing when you headbutt it and is, for that precise reason, extremely satisfying to headbutt.
What she has no idea about is what she is. She does not know that her kind was hunted down to almost nothing, that for a while there was not a single one of them left running wild anywhere on earth, that every bison alive today comes from a small, stubborn handful that a few people refused to let go of. She does not know she is one of the oldest animals in Europe, or that a red calf standing in a Welsh field in July is a quiet victory thousands of years in the making.
She knows the grass is warm, and her mother is enormous, and the day has no end. That is the whole of her world, and it is a very good one.
The most ancient thing in the field is brand new again this summer, and having, by some distance, the best month of her life.
