“If Israel did to Gaza…” If? That is going very far in this territory
Kasparov: Ukraine is under the heaviest bombardment one can imagine. On CNN you see Gaza, Gaza, Gaza. If Israel did to Gaza for 24 hours what Putin does to Ukraine, there would be no Gaza. Russia's bombing of Ukraine is much worse than carpet bombing. 1/

An open letter in solidarity with Iran’s political prisoners drew vitriolic condemnation from parts of the anti-imperialist left — but the criticisms are short-sighted and misplaced, argues @yassinhs, a former political prisoner in Syria, for @newlinesmag. newlinesmag.com/argument/the…

While everyone debates the Guardian letter, here are some much more important letters, written at great risk by the very political prisoners currently being treated as mere footnotes to ideological arguments. These are the voices that actually deserve our attention. ⬇️

In this piece, @TariqAli_News quotes a poem by Iran’s renowned poet Ahmad Shamlu. But Shamlu was also a brilliant journalist. He edited Ketab-e Jomeh (The Friday Book), a monthly literary, cultural and political magazine that began publication about six months after the 1979 Revolution. The following is a translation of the editorial in its first issue, dated 26 July 1979 issuing a prescient warning about 'the dark days' of the Islamic Republic: Dark days lie ahead. A bleak and calamitous period is upon us which, although logically it cannot last long, has already revealed its dark nature and seeks to establish its domination through the negation of democracy, the negation of national identity, and the negation of the achievements of civilisation, culture, and art. Such a period cannot endure indefinitely, and the inexorable force of history will, without doubt, crush it beneath its heavy wheel. But our generation and the next will suffer a loss in this sorrowful struggle that will undoubtedly be devastating. For absolutist zealots regard every idea of freedom as an enemy and consider their own triumph impossible except through the total eradication of thought and ideas. Thus, the first objective of the regime that is now attempting to consolidate its power through the blows of clubs and daggers—and that has taken its first steps by setting fire to libraries, openly attacking active artistic circles, and brazenly violating the country’s cultural institutions—is the slaughter of all the thinkers and free spirits of society. We now stand on the threshold of a sweeping storm. The weathervanes have begun to howl and turn, and a plague-like dust has risen from the horizon. One can seek refuge in the crypts of silence, hold one’s tongue and bow one’s head until the relentless storm has passed. But the historical mission of intellectuals does not permit them to seek safe shelter. Every cry is a warning; so, from our bloodied throats, we shall cry out and announce the coming of the storm. The shroud-clad army of committed intellectuals has entered the field in an unequal battle. Let the blow inflicted upon them serve as a warning sign of the assault to which all the cultural and civilisational achievements of the peoples inhabiting this geographical region are now exposed. #Iran #Iranwar @guardian

Iranian prisoners and their families, and all those fighting for justice for the thousands of protesters killed in just a couple of months, do not have the luxury to take part in this conversation. They are fighting one of the hardest, more gruesome fights in the world today.

A “philosopher of biology” Scientific racism has been making a comeback for some time now, and little has been done to counter it. Indeed, his views on the so-called “genetic origins of group differences in IQ” passed peer review and were published in several philosophy journals
Nathan Cofnas, who launched the witch-hunt against Professor Jason Arday, wrote a blog post arguing that in meritocracy, Black people would largely be absent from prominent positions outside of sports and entertainment. He claimed that, under such a system, Black people would “disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment.”

What surprises me isn’t that this world is full of corrupt, unscrupulous, dishonest talking heads with inflated academic credentials. What surprises me more is that people who, in theory, ought to respect themselves, their time, and their own intelligence keep giving such people a microphone, consuming their info garbage, and making no conclusions.

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

This is an important story confirming what many of us already suspected connecting Boeing and a US army vet/company to the RSF.
Reuters found that companies controlled by a US Army Special Forces veteran operated a fleet of aging Boeing aircraft that flew to key logistics hubs used by the Rapid Support Forces during the Sudan war reut.rs/4vuf5eQ @specialreports

My latest , I examines how Syria's ruling authorities have relied on coercion, sectarian instrumentalization, and selective justice to consolidate power, and how this impacts the country's religious and ethnic minorities and its broader democratic transition.
A year and a half after Assad's fall, our newest article by Joseph Daher examines how Syria's ruling authorities have relied on coercion, sectarian instrumentalization, and selective justice to consolidate power, and how this impacts the country's religious and ethnic minorities and its broader democratic transition. 🔗 Read the full article: socialsciences-centre.org/en…

Yesterday, Abbas Akbari, one of the protesters arrested during the January 2026 protests, and today Gholamreza Khani Shekarab were executed on charges of “spying for Israel.” Since the start of the war, Iranian authorities have executed 37 political prisoners.
Mojtaba Kian was executed today on charges of “transmitting information related to defense industry units” to “networks affiliated with the enemy.” He had been arrested in March 2026, during the US-Israeli war against Iran.

In this interview, I speak publicly for the first time about some childhood experiences that enduringly shaped my scholarship and politics. We also discuss the war, Rojava/Kurdish politics, “inter-subaltern colonialism”, Eurocentrism and UCD, and much more. AmirHossein Moradi and Ali Younesi, in two separate letters from Evin and Ghezel Hesar Prisons, have stated that they do not accept any "pardon" from the Iranian regime. Both Sharif University students, they have been imprisoned for the past six years and one month. Here are the messages they issued a few days ago: #Amirhossein_Moradi from Evin Prions: The smiling faces of my dearest friends (Vahid, Pouya, Babak, Mohammad, Shahrokh, and Abolhassan) at the moment of their separation and transfer from Evin to Ghezel Hesar Prison, where they refused to submit in humiliation to your vile regime until their very last breath, remain before my eyes. I also think of their mothers and fathers. As I stated explicitly in September 2024, I repeat once again: I neither asked for nor desire your disgraceful pardon. In response to the bloody massacres of January and the recent criminal executions, it is unquestionably we, the oppressed people of Iran, who stand in the position to forgive you. However, know this with certainty: we neither forgive nor forget. Until the people of Iran are freed from your tyranny, I will not even think of my own release from captivity, nor will I beg it from you. #Ali_Younesi from Evin Prison: On Monday, May 11, 2026, I was handed a notice dated February 23, 2026, under the title of the “22 Bahman Amnesty,” stating that the remainder of my prison sentence (7 months) had been pardoned. First: I have never requested a pardon, nor will I ever do so. Freedom is a stolen right. We do not beg for what has been taken from us; we fight to reclaim it. Second: I have role models: six proud cellmates who were sent to the gallows. Every day and every moment, their memory lives within me and their voices echo in my ears. They did not bargain for their lives; shame on me if I bargain for my freedom. Third: In his defense statement, Vahid Bani Amerian said: “Is it we who must defend ourselves, or you?” I too ask: “Is it we who should forgive, or you?” Forgiveness and pardon belong, more than anyone else, to the grieving mothers and fathers. Therefore, to you grieving mothers and fathers: I hope you will forgive any shortcomings on my part, for you alone are those from whom I seek forgiveness. As for all the suffering, torture, and imprisonment endured until now, and whatever imprisonment, exile, and hardship still remain, they are nothing but duty. It is through the strength of your children’s sacrifice that we continue to fight, and we will remain steadfast in this struggle. Fighting for the freedom of the people of Iran is not a source of regret or suffering, but the greatest source of honor.

Anti-imperialism should mean solidarity with peoples, not loyalty to anti-Western states. @KamranMatin writes on how the Iran war has exposed the contradictions of a left that condemns US-Israeli aggression while excusing the Islamic Republic’s repression. theamargi.com/posts/the-iran…
