Dana picked up the deed and read it twice. Then she looked at him for a long time. She didn't say anything. She didn't have to. His mother started to speak, and I raised my hand, gently. "You're all in my home. I've been polite for twenty minutes. I'd like you to leave now." They left in pieces. His sister first, then his parents, then the others. Dana went last, and at the door she turned to me and said quietly, "I didn't know." I believed her. It didn't change anything, but I believed her. My husband stayed one second longer, searching for something to say. I held the door open. Then I locked it, went back to my mother's armchair, and finished my glass of water in a silent house that was, finally, entirely mine.
