Thank you @NETFUNDkenya, years ago-you supported Matathia Primary School,Lari-Kiambu,to establish a tree nursery and consequently a woodlot within it's compound. Today, those trees have matured. The program also promoted local community to adopt sustainable agroforestry farming.

As we prepare for the Octoberโ€“December 2026 rains, letโ€™s turn awareness into action. Follow official weather forecasts and early warnings, avoid flooded roads and rivers, keep drainage channels clear, protect wetlands and catchments, harvest rainwater, conserve soil and water, and grow the right trees in the right places. ๐’๐ญ๐š๐ฒ ๐ข๐ง๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐ฆ๐ž๐. ๐’๐ญ๐š๐ฒ ๐ฉ๐ซ๐ž๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ž๐. ๐’๐ญ๐š๐ฒ ๐ฌ๐š๐Ÿ๐ž. @DeboraBarasa @Eng_F_Ngeno @IGAD_CPAC @KenyaRedCross @NDOCKenya @KBCChannel1 @Kenyayearbook @MyGovKe #ElNinoRains #OND2026 #EarlyWarningForAll

I held a bilateral meeting with Dr. Elinasi Monga, the International Union of Conservation Nature (ICUN)Regional Head-Land Systems Programme, Eastern and Southern Africa with the focus on strengthening the collaboration between the State Department for Environment and Climate Change and IUCN on areas of strategic interests and in line with government priorities. Our discussions centred on programmatic areas around land systems; integrated water resources management systems; ocean and coastal resilient programmes and biodiversity and climate change. I acknowledged that IUCN's relationship with Kenya is already quite broad since IUCN is already undertaking projects like biodiversity mainstreaming in productive sectors through BIODEV 2030 where IUCN handed over to Kenya policy briefs on agriculture, forestry and livestock, translating biodiversity science into sectoral policy recommendations and also appreciated that BIODEV moved beyond conservation policies and towards mainstreaming biodiversity into economic sectors. Discussions centered on how they can work together to move the BIODEV 2030 recommendations from policy briefs into actual investment programmes and regulatory reforms. The discussions also focused on rangelands restoration and community resilience to address biodiversity loss, rangeland degradation, invasive species, climate vulnerability and resource based conflicts. The IUCN GEF supported project on strengthening forest management for improved biodiversity conservation and climate resilience in Kenyaโ€™s southern rangelands, with IUCN as the implementing agency was reviewed and potential future opportunities to develop a larger national programme around forest landscape restoration, biodiversity and community benefits and including better integration with Kenyaโ€™s climate and carbon-market framework discussed. The IUCN work on marine and coastal biodiversity could also complement Kenyaโ€™s wider marine and coastal conservation agenda and also connect with the Nairobi Convention and UNEPโ€™s Western Indian Ocean Programme. We agreed that the strongest future opportunity is to move from individual conservation and biodiversity projects toward a more strategic Kenya-IUCN environmental partnership linked to Kenyaโ€™s MEA implementation, climate agenda, circular economy and environmental finance including: implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework; biodiversity finance; carbon markets and biodiversity safeguards; circular economy and nature positive production; nature based solutions and ecosystem restoration; and science; data and environmental monitoring. We are looking forward to the implementation of the project โ€˜Unlocking Biodiversity Action: Establishing Kenyaโ€™s National Biodiversity Coordination Mechanismโ€™ and itโ€™s operationalization by IUCN and the State Department in implementing Targets 14 mainstreaming biodiversity, Target 21 on knowledge, data and information sharing and Target 22 on participation and inclusion of the KMGBF. #COP17 #IUCN #Ulaanbaatar2026

The Principal Secretary for Environment and Climate Change @Eng_F_Ngeno held a meeting with the Kenya delegation attending COP 17 from different Ministries, Departments and Agencies. He commended and appreciated the Kenya delegation for their dedication and commitment and emphasized the importance of Kenyaโ€™s preparation and participation in the COP to promote Kenyaโ€™s national interest. The PS commended the team for advancing Africaโ€™s priorities in the COP so that strong outcomes can be realised and the importance of translating the global decisions into implementation at a national level. The PS highlighted Kenyaโ€™s leadership in global environmental governance and reiterated the promotion of whole of government coordination in advancing Kenyaโ€™s national interest. He outlined some of the key interests for Kenya particularly on: the discussions on drought and the adoption of a drought protocol advocated for by the Africa group; the UNCCD budget and financial outlook and the financial implications; the future strategic framework to ensure that Africaโ€™s and Kenyaโ€™s interests are reflected; land tenure; gender matters; more predictable funding for the Conventionโ€™s implementation and strengthening the role of the Committee on Science and Technology in providing robust scientific evidence and data to guide the implementation of the Convention, among others. He also congratulated Kenya for leading Africa in the Committee on the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) for the last two years and on itโ€™s nomination to lead the Africa Group in the Committee on Science and Technology (CST) in the next two years. Furthermore PS highlighted the High-Level Ministerial segment where the Cabinet Secretary would join and offer leadership and lastly urged the delegates to remain coordinated and strategically flexible throughout the conference, while maintaining clear positions on the issues of national importance and to ensure that the outcomes of COP 17 reflect Kenyaโ€™s interest and Africaโ€™s broader priorities under the Convention. He lastly called on all delegates to leverage on the several meetings and side events to learn best practices from around the globe on: management of rangelands and pastoralism; restoration of degraded landscapes and ecosystems; drought preparedness, resilience and early action; sustainable pastoral production systems; community participation; restoring livelihoods; and the application of science and technology in monitoring land degradation and restoration that can be translated into action at national and community levels. #ulaanbataar #COP17 #UNEP
