The pressure needs to stay on the Treasurer and Treasury to explain this.
If the answer isnāt pretty (ie Treasury gave the answers it knew were being sought, not what they knew was accurate), then taxpayers deserve to know.
āTreasury was contacted by Yahoo Finance on Tuesday afternoon seeking clarification about the seeming omission. By Friday, it could still not provide a response or clarification.ā š¤¦āāļø

Feels like the rest of the world hasn't yet quite caught up to the fact that Australia now looks less like The Lucky Country and more like the other stagnant non-US developed economies

Wait until weāre officially in a recession. Then the āaxis of grievanceā will be precisely the young people the government is pretending to help.
āLabor's reticence to publicly acknowledge the complaints about its tax changes aren't just coming from those who bare it political ill will is, frankly, p*ssing young people off.ā

Young investors will bear the brunt of CGT changes the government says are about addressing intergenerational inequity. au.finance.yahoo.com/news/jiā¦

I legitimately canāt believe this response. Shares have been under compensated so instead of addressing that or just under compensating property going forward, we are going to increase tax on shares.

Denying younger people the same opportunities to save & invest as their parents does not enhance āintergenerational fairnessā ā quite the opposite.
This is a straight tax grab that will hurt investment, especially in early-stage startups.
And not help housing affordability at all.

.@cjoye argues that our tax system unduly penalises risk-taking and innovation, the basis of growth.
I agree.
But that does not justify preferential treatment of real estate, the source of most capital gains, through no sacrifice or effort by the investor.

Itās hard to escape the conclusion that Millennials and Zs are in favour of low taxes for Boomers and high taxes for themselves. This behaviour also evident in preferences for higher taxes on high income earners, even as they approach their peak earning years.

There may be good reasons to cut CGT discount & restrict -ve gearing to say 2 propsā¦but it wont fix housing supply & itās hard to see how it improves intergen equity. Older gens got the benefit of concessions(I got into prop as a rentvester) & now itās being curtailed for young!

Theft from aspirational Australians will be delivered in the budget next week. Young Aussie puts in $10k, compounds at 15% for 50 years ā $10.84 million.
Inflation-indexed cost base: just $44k. Current CGT: $2.63M tax.
Laborās new proposal: $5.23M tax.
They want to seize HALF your lifeās work.
This isnāt tax reform ā itās theft from aspirational Australia.

So far, every version of the CGT change the government has floated would result in young people paying a higher portion of tax than older Australians had to and will have to.
Yet Albanese keeps insisting itās an āintergenerational fairnessā reform.
Is he just hoping to blag it past young people who arenāt paying attention? What am I missing?
