“Last night, Minnesota was rocked by the politically-motivated assassinations of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the attempts on the lives of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. Speaker Emerita Hortman was an unapologetic champion for Minnesota. In our state House, she fought every day for reproductive freedom, stronger public schools, LGBTQ+ rights, and a brighter future for everyone that called the North Star State home. She was our DFL leader, colleague, and friend. Her loss will be felt by every Minnesotan. I also join Minnesotans across our state in praying for Senator Hoffman and Yvette’s swift recovery. It’s hard to believe what happened in our state last night, but the murders of Speaker Emerita Hortman and Mr. Hortman’s are clearly a consequence of the violent political extremism that is on the rise across our country.
