New Zealand participated in the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons at #UNGA81 reaffirming NZ’s commitment to nuclear disarmament. New Zealand calls for: 1.All States possessing or relying on nuclear weapons should take concrete, measurable steps towards their elimination. 2.States outside the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty should renounce their nuclear arsenals and join the Treaty as non-nuclear-weapon States. 3.States yet to sign or ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty should do so urgently. 4.All States should move to join the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, as the clearest legal expression of the international community’s rejection of nuclear weapons. 🇳🇿🤝🇺🇳 Read the full statement here ➡️ bit.ly/4yhsoSa @NZUN @MFATNZ #UNGA81 #GlobalGoals #NuclearBan

New Zealand delivered a statement at the High-Level Meeting on Sea-Level Rise last week. NZ recognises the strong leadership of the Pacific Islands Forum, including on the legal dimensions of sea-level rise, and reaffirms our commitment to working with a diverse coalition of partners to respond to the impacts of sea-level rise, and to prioritise the protection of vulnerable communities and nations from it. The consequences of sea-level rise are not distant scenarios; we must act now. Read the full statement here ➡️bit.ly/4xWsf5Q @NZUN @MFATNZ #UNGA81 🇳🇿🤝🇺🇳

The New Zealand National Statement was delivered at the 81st session of UN General Assembly today. “As we prepare to appoint the next Secretary-General to lead the UN into the next phase, we should be clear about what this moment requires. We call on the new Secretary-General: - to be a courageous guardian of the UN charter and to assert the UN’s vital role in the maintenance of peace and security; - to provide strong leadership across the UN’s development and human rights pillars; - to maintain momentum and ambition on UN reform; and - to ensure that the UN works for all states. The sovereign equality of states is one of the most central principles of the UN Charter. It must also be central to your approach. The promise of the multilateral system is that every state, regardless of its size or circumstances has a stake in shaping our shared future. The most fundamental step we can take as Member States to revive this organisation is to unequivocally recommit ourselves – both in words and in deeds - to the principles that the Charter requires us to follow in our relations with other states - respect for sovereignty, the pursuit of dialogue and cooperation, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.” 🇳🇿🤝🇺🇳 @NZUN @MFATNZ #UNGA81 📷UN Photo

Ukraine agreed to a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire in March 2025. 51 UN member states call on Russia to finally do the same. They have issued a joint statement in support of Ukraine. "We stand in solidarity with Ukraine as it continues to face Russia’s war of aggression," the statement says. The partner countries called for protecting freedom of navigation in the Black Sea, commercial shipping and critical infrastructure, and safeguarding Ukrainian grain exports and global food security. They also called on Russia to immediately return all arbitrarily detained, forcibly transferred or deported Ukrainian civilians, including children, as well as all prisoners of war and internees. "Ukraine wants peace. We want peace. Russia must stop its aggression, accept a ceasefire, and engage meaningfully in negotiations towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with international law," they stressed. We thank all partner countries for their strong support and solidarity with Ukraine.
