Anglo-Canada once had a distinct culture—Loyalist, British in its institutions and habits, deliberately set apart from American republicanism. Federal policies from the 1960s onward, often advanced by Quebec prime ministers, declined to protect it. Official bilingualism and multiculturalism reframed the country as a mosaic without a core Anglo inheritance, while Quebec received both provincial tools and federal transfers to defend its own language and culture for generations. The result is the casual assumption that only Quebec has a culture worth keeping. That assumption is false. Without a deliberate effort to recognize and preserve Anglo-Canadian history, institutions, and character, the shared language with the United States will finish the job: Anglo-Canada becomes just another northern market for American popular culture. @GeoffRuss3

Every time zone in Canada has its own distinct culture—Newfoundland, the Maritimes, rural Ontario the Prairies, the West—that deserves the same recognition and protection as Quebec.

This would be an epic intercontinental Seaway, btw.
Ever wondered why most of Canada's big lakes lie along this line? It's because meltwater from an Ice Age ice sheet collected at the edge and formed Lake Agassiz. Much of the water drained away. However, some remained in a linear arrangement, forming the lakes that we see today.

Make sure your loved ones know.
I love electric cars, but i don't love the trend of them having electronically controlled door handles. If a lithium battery catches fire, you only have a few seconds to escape. And these doors can fail to open when you need them to.

Many modern vehicles (not just EVs) use electronic door releases but include mechanical manual backups for power loss, per owner manuals. Tesla front doors, for example, have a pull-up lever ahead of the window switches. tesla.com/ownersmanual/m… carscoops.com/2025/10/how-to… consumerreports.org/cars/car-safet…

The egg carton is a Canadian invention. In 1911, Joseph Coyle, a newspaper editor in Smithers, BC, overheard a hotel owner and a farmer arguing over broken eggs. So he went home and built the first egg carton out of paper. Simple problem, simple fix. A century later we are all still using it. 🇨🇦

Anglo-Canadians are the English-speaking people of English, Scottish, Irish, and French ancestry who formed the dominant culture of English Canada. Sharing a language with the United States does not make that culture American, nor does it erase the distinct history, institutions, and traditions that developed here and that deserve deliberate protection and continuity. For Canada’s multiculturalism to be coherent rather than rootless, the founding cultures—Anglo-Canadian, Franco-Canadian, and Indigenous—must first be clearly defined, developed, and publicly sustained. Only then can newcomers be genuinely welcomed to maintain and celebrate their own heritages, while recognizing that the host cultures remain the framework of the country and are entitled to the same respect and visibility.

MarkJCarney, as Prime Minister, delivered remarks emphasizing Canada’s British, French, and Indigenous heritage, followed by strategic visits to the United Kingdom, France, and Nunavut.

What Carney tells reporters in French "We want to arrive at sustainable immigration levels. Well, we'll see" "Quebec is distinct, it's unique because of its culture, its language and other aspects of its nature. So it's appropriate in the case of Quebec." @MarkJCarney

Oct 20, 1856: after four years of construction, the first through train runs from Montreal to Toronto over the Grand Trunk Railway. The train consisted of several baggage and passenger cars. Its purpose was to distribute furnishings to various stations along the line. 1/2

I have no referendum hot takes except to say that the market never priced in any risk to the Canadian oil and gas sector, never regarded the separation scenario as credible, and therefore shrugged off the Alberta referendum both before and after the vote. Market movements consistent with ordinary energy-sector volatility.
