AUC Chairperson Condemns Deadly Drone Attacks in Sudan and the Abyei Area. The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, @ymahmoudali, strongly condemns the recent deadly drone attacks in #Sudan and the #Abyei Area. Media reports citing local and medical sources indicate approximately 80 people killed in Al-Dibab, West Kordofan, on 18 October, 23 in Nyala, South Darfur, on 16 October, and at least three children in Khartoum on 19 October. Separately, reports citing local authorities put the death toll from the 19 October attack on Amiet market in the Abyei Area at more than 150. He deplores the intolerable price civilian populations continue to pay through the loss of loved ones, displacement, destruction of livelihoods and disruption of access to food, healthcare and essential services. Expressing solidarity with the affected communities, he extends his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes the injured a speedy recovery. The Chairperson calls on all parties to halt attacks affecting civilians and civilian infrastructure, protect humanitarian and medical personnel, and allow safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian assistance, in accordance with applicable international law, including international humanitarian law. Reaffirming respect for Sudan’s sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, he urges all parties to refrain from actions that fuel the conflict, risk dividing the country or threaten neighbouring States. The Chairperson reaffirms his support for ongoing regional and international mediation efforts and urges coordinated action towards an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and an inclusive Sudanese-led and Sudanese-owned political process. Earlier today, @AU_ECOSOCC participated in the Insights4Peace webinar on Africa and the Momentum for the Reform of the Multilateral System, hosted by @africa_amani under the @NeTT4Peace initiative. The webinar examined progress toward reforming the @UN Security Council and the wider multilateral system, including how Africa can turn political commitments into concrete negotiations and secure fairer representation and financing within global institutions. Speaking on behalf of Ambassador @WilCarew, Head of the African Union ECOSOCC Secretariat, Dr. Raj Chintaram, ECOSOCC CSO Engagement Officer, drew on our ongoing work to advance citizen engagement in multilateral reform. In February 2026, we convened a briefing in Addis Ababa 🇪🇹 on Security Council reform through Charter review under Article 109 and the @_AfricanUnion’s C-10 Model. Our Citizens' Forum, held in July of this year in Addis Ababa under the theme 'Reimagining Global Governance: Africa and a World in Transition," further examined #Africa’s place in a changing global order. In September, we carried the Forum’s outcomes to a side event during the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Dr. Chintaram noted that despite more than two decades of advocacy for UN Security Council reform, Africa’s Common Position remains largely within diplomatic and policy circles. Citizens need to understand these demands and have opportunities to influence the agenda, particularly as reforms to global institutions affect conflict resolution, borrowing costs, public spending, climate finance and reparatory justice. He outlined practical proposals to strengthen public ownership of the reform process: ▪️ Develop a plain-language citizens’ guide to Africa’s reform priorities, available in AU working languages and major African languages. ▪️ Establish regular #civilsociety consultations ahead of major negotiations, with channels for citizen input to reach the African Union Commission and the Committee of Ten (C-10). ▪️ Introduce an annual civil society scorecard tracking commitments on Africa’s representation, development financing and global governance reform. ▪️ Strengthen international solidarity and engagement with the African #diaspora to build wider public support for Africa’s priorities. ▪️ Advance a continental #youth-led campaign and sustained media engagement to make multilateral reform a public issue beyond diplomatic summits. He also stressed that protecting civic space is essential to this work, as citizens must be able to organize, speak freely and engage with institutions if they are to take ownership of Africa’s reform agenda. Dr, Chintaram further emphasized the need to connect Africa’s diplomatic efforts with sustained citizen engagement, ensuring that demands for fair representation, financial justice and institutional accountability are understood and supported by the people they are intended to serve. #MultilateralReform #UNSCReform #UNGA81 #UNSC #Agenda2063

Speaking at the 21st Extraordinary African Union (AU) Summit on conflict prevention & resolution in Luanda this morning, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf called for urgent reform of Africa’s peace & security architecture. He @ymahmoudali observed that from Sudan & eastern DRC to Somalia, the Sahel, Libya, northern Mozambique & Madagascar, persistent crises and emerging threats, including terrorism, violent extremism, piracy, transnational crime & the mistreatment of migrants, demand stronger collective action. "Prevention must become our priority. We need a strengthened continental early-warning system, more effective implementation of AU decisions, sustainable financing for peace operations and a fully operational Peace Fund", he said. Chairperson Youssouf added that partnerships, including with the United Nations, must reflect Africa’s realities and expectations. The implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2719 is a legitimate and urgent call. He also emphasised  that AU's Regional Economic Communities & Regional Mechanisms remain central to preventive diplomacy. Continuous consultation among the PSC, the Commission, Member States and regional bodies is essential. He further underscored that no single country can confront these threats alone. Solidarity, pooled resources and greater Pan-African sovereignty in peace and security are imperative, he added. On unconstitutional changes of government, he said that the AU position remains clear: "firmness in defending AU norms, alongside dialogue and support." In conclusion, H.E. Mr. Youssouf said that this is a long-term undertaking requiring unwavering political, underscoring  that the Summit be a Summit of choices; choices that strengthen Africa’s capacity to take collective ownership of its peace & security. Convened under the leadership of H.E João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, & AU Champion for Peace & Reconciliation in Africa, & chaired by H.E. Évariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi, the Chairperson of the African Union.  The Summit will provide an opportunity for Heads of State & Government to undertake a strategic assessment of the effectiveness of existing continental mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution.
