We're thrilled to have officially published the final version of this paper, "A Distinct Subpopulation of Extended Amygdala Neurons Drives Food Intake"! Congrats to co-first authors Isaac & Ethan, now in MD & PhD training at @ClevelandClinic and @UCL sciencedirect.com/science/ar…
New preprint! We identified Vipr2-expressing BNST neurons as a distinct population of the oval nucleus that promotes feeding, is activated by food restriction, is non-overlapping with appetite-suppressing PKC delta neurons, and projects to hypothalamus. biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…

In 2024, we introduced universal DNA rearrangement with bridge RNA. Now, in @Nature, @pdhsu @hnisimasu & team solve the structural mechanism of bridge excision—how the complex assembles for intramolecular recombination—yielding new engineering handles for programmable biology.

How does the brain link a novel food to illness that happens later? We found that acetylcholine, released in part by parabrachial Calca neurons, can work through GPCRs in central amygdala to bridge the gap.

Super excited to see OmniMouse 🐭 released 🎉
A single model of mouse visual cortex — queryable for many different questions:
• Predicting neural activity from video 📹 👉 🧠
• Predicting neural activity in one population from activity in another 🧠 👉 🧠
• Forecasting neural activity forward in time, given video, past activity, or both 📹 &🧠 👉 🧠
• Decoding behavior (gaze, pupil size, running speed) from neural activity 🧠 👉 🐁
• Predicting neural responses conditioned on behavior 📹 & 🐁 👉 🧠
This kind of multi-modal & multi-task flexibility is an exciting approach for systems neuroscience, enabling systematic in silico exploration of hypotheses about single neuron and population coding
The dataset comprises >2 million neurons across 78 mice and 328 sessions of mouse visual cortex, with naturalistic and parametric stimuli alongside behavior. Both the dataset and the pretrained models are available on @huggingface 🙌

#JNeurosci: Overconsumption of salt is a major global public health issue, so understanding the brain circuits that drive salt appetite is imperative. Anversa, Teng et al. found that BNST neurons gate salt appetite induced by low sodium levels.
