I don’t need commitments to funding badly designed, doomed-to-fail trials w/ fuzzy endpoints to “cure post-viral diseases.” I want a commitment to preventing + containing the spread of airborne viruses. Preventing exposure beats trying to fix a problem once damage is done.

My most frightening symptoms during the first 2-9 months were tachycardia and chest pain. I was terrified. To this day, I can’t understand how people are so eager to play Russian roulette with this virus. #AvoidSARS2
YOUR ATTENTION: 🚹Every new COVID-19 (re)infection elevates your cardiovascular risk profile. Even mild cases can raise the odds of a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and other CV events for months to years afterward. Risk is higher with more severe illness, yes, but it’s certainly not limited to severe disease. Updated vaccination will show some mitigation(infection severity↓) but doesn’t give you a risk-free pass! Bestes gimmick - bester Leo. 1000 Dank fĂŒr alles

This should have ended 2 years ago. It is SUPER easy to screen herds for the virus (bulk milk testing). Infected cattle clear the virus after a few weeks. The outbreak could have been stopped (and still can be) if we had the will to enforce strict quarantines. We don’t. 9/

If you are job hunting in a mask, there are employers that are unlikely to be accepting of your mask. There are certain places that have to pretend the pandemic is over, otherwise their business model is disrupted.

Then there’s the rapid or lateral flow tests. Their false negative rate is ridiculously high - somewhere in between 30-40% (false positives are at less than 1%). A recent study shows the virus is much more present in the throat for days earlier than the nasal passages. 16.

I guess it comes down to how committed one is to never again being reinfected. But most of us in this space long for those with public profiles to model the importance of respirator use. We live with lots of abuse for our masking and long for public allies.

Normal exercise responses require parasympathetic withdrawal and sympathetic predominance, which increases heart rate and consequently cardiac output. If those responses are already impaired, why are attempts at further autonomic down-regulation our default therapeutic direction?

Facts are inconvenient.
NHS doctor: There’s COVID and flu armageddon in our hospital... It’s everywhere, to the point where they’re definitely not swabbing on purpose... They’re like, ‘We don’t even want to know if you have COVID or flu, because it just makes things complicated.’ youtu.be/n9v49YhY5oE

Amazing news: Altruan has updated the PlusLife device! The mini dock comes with significant technical improvements and, most importantly, our genius @virus_sucks_ has managed to update the app to support the new device!!!

It’s the end of 2026 and we still can’t have decent antivirals (PEP or PrEP) because our political leaders refuse to acknowledge that SARS2 is a biosecurity risk and that it’s airborne.
📱 In multiple new post-hoc analyses, @SHIONOGI_JP @ShionogiUS used data from phase 3 trials of @XOCOVA / Ensitrelvir (SCORPIO-PEP for COVID prophylaxis, and SCORPIO-HR/SCORPIO-SR for acute treatment) to produce new insights across 3 categories: 1. Breakthrough infections (people who took Xocova for prophylaxis, but still got infected anyway): ‱ In those who took Xocova (144 cases), peak viral RNA averaged 3.1 log₁₀ copies/mL compared to 4.3 log₁₀ copies/mL with placebo - a 16-fold reduction. ‱ Concerning symptomatic breakthrough cases, 28.6% (8/28) of Xocova recipients experienced severe symptoms, compared to 53.9% (48/89) for placebo recipients. ‱ Mean maximum symptom scores were 26% lower for Xocova participants - 6.6 compared to 8.9. 2. Pre-symptomatic administration of Xocova (People who were actually already infected at the time of enrollment, but received Xocova anyway because their initial screenings tests were negative and they had no symptoms): ‱ Among 237 participants retrospectively identified as infected at baseline, Xocova recipients had lower average viral RNA levels on Days 3 and 6. ‱ Concerning symptomatic cases, 11.1% (2/18) of Xocova recipients experienced severe symptoms, compared to 37.4% (9/24) of placebo recipients 3. Infectious virus titers, where the aim is to assesses the presence of replication-competent virus, unlike RT-PCR which may also identify noninfectious viral remnants: ‱ On day 4, Xocova recipients (n=484) had numerically greater reductions in infectious virus titers than those who received placebo (n=487). Average reductions were 0.21 log₁₀ TCID₅₀/mL greater with Xocova - a 1.6-fold difference. Similar results were observed across subgroups regardless of age, vaccination status, and risk factors for severe COVID-19. ‱ On day 4, 95.7% of Xocova recipients (363/484) had undetectable infectious viral load, compared to 72.1% (351/487) of placebo recipients. Very important 3-posts-long thread 👇 TL;DR: The *decision to not attempt to stop the spread* is the core reason of pandemic response failures.
Replying to @globalhlthtwit
That was the reason why we had FIVE times the death rate of East Asian states, prolonged national lockdowns and care homes devastated. They suppressed their epidemics and stopped the spread within 4-6 weeks using strong public health measures of find, test, trace, isolate and support. bmj.com/content/389/bmj-2024
